Well the similarities start at the use of "mon", for monsters and went from there.

I think Digimon is accused of copying Pokemon simply beacuse it has not quite enjoyed the same success as Pokemon, if it had been more successful, then no doubt Pokemon would have been accused of copying Digimon.

Pokemon came first and became the more popular of the two series. That is the only reason.

Oh that and the fact both shows ended with the suffix -mon.

Ah yes, because every anime is completely different and unique. Pokémon and Digimon have some similarities I guess, the whole kids battle with monsters thing is a similar theme. But Digimon always felt more grown up than Pokémon.

I think it was because either the anime for Pokemon was released earlier, or because chances are, people saw Pokemon first.

They are called Digimon and Pokemon because the japanese like abbreviations.

Pokemon = Pocket Monsters
Digimon = Digital Monsters

Simple as that.

because pokémon came first(as far as I know) and they both end with mon.

Wait, people seriously think that?

I haven't watched either since I was just a little kid, but they're completely different aside from the fact that a bunch of kids walk around with battling monsters and the name of both shows ends with "-mon."

They both end with 'mon.'

That's about it.

Edit: Also the evolutions and monster fighting themes.

yeah, the mon suffix is what people noticed first, then small similarities cemented the idea, digimon isn't copying pokemon, but they are similar

Because the Simpsons did it first.

But no, seriously, it's cause one group will always see another show that's becoming popular and competing within the same niche, (kids beat monsters up with other monsters) and they can't bear to be wrong about which one is "better" (as defined by popularity). Claiming copying is the easiest way to discredit anyone or anything.

To do some residential nit-picking, Digimon came out BEFORE Pokemon. But the TV show took longer to come out, is all.

Checkmate.

Alright,No this isn't a ***** thread.
Greatest post of the month.

Anyway, Digimon came out in 1997, Pokemon came out in '95[footnote]Though those are merely the TV shows.[/footnote]. So yes, I'm sure the creators of Digimon took more than a few inspirational cues from Pokemon. Both have creatures that fight[footnote]Though Pokemon's creatures are more memorable, zing![/footnote], both have kids controlling them/being their masters[footnote]Being their masters...now that brought some weird mental images.[/footnote], both were made in Japan[footnote]Okay, maybe that mental image wasn't unexpected.[/footnote].

The only difference I can see is that in Digimon, they fight against evil Digimon, and don't store Digimon in a ball, and each of the kids only have one creature.
In Pokemon, though, the difference is that they fight against evil humans, and store Pokemen in a ball, and each of the kids only have about over 9000 creatures![footnote]Citation needed.[/footnote]

I would imagine the IDEA was to go on pokemons success, but Digimon always seemed to have a much more mature theme to it, people actually died, the plot was about fighting the powers of darkness, the characters seemed more developed, and it was less cutesy.

But in all fairness, unless you actually watched it, I fully expect you to have just wrote it off as a rip off, because that wasn't possible to know unless you actually watched the show.
