Why the hate for Mojang?

I think people forget that March Madness is suppose to be a yearly thing - not something based upon history.

Personally I think Mojang, Blizzard, or Rockstar (whichever studio made RDRedemption) should have won this year based completely on the products they released over the past 12 months.

Yeah Valve has a great pedigree, but so does almost every developer in the contest. The real question people should be asking is that they released this year, and what their impact were this year. Minecraft has been crazy influential this year...what's Valve released this year? Oh yeah...Alien Swarm...

Oh don't worry, maybe the shock of winning the Developer Showdown will cause Notch to take some more vacation. [http://i53.tinypic.com/r73yps.png]
Is this for real? I mean, that's kinda lazy. As in, really lazy. I can't imagine he actually takes that many vacations.
He made enough money off of Minecraft when it was a solo project that he basically never needs to work again. I'd probably do the same thing.

It's Popular Now It Sucks, mostly.

Also Notch does come across as being pretty lazy sometimes, I guess.

Where'd you get that quote from?
In any case, Dwarf Fortress may be awesome but I've never seen that awesomeness. I've tried it and found the game to be utterly impenetrable.

I guess my problem with Mojang winning, besides the fact that I'm a huge valve fanboy, is that they only have one game published so far. To me this doesn't seem to be enough evidence that they are good are not. In other words, what if Minecraft was just a fluke and the next range of games that they put out are all crap?

I guess I would understand if we were rating games, but we're rating companies. I don't know how many times I've typed this but I'll do it one more time. I will live by these words "Lok'tar Og..." no wait that's something else.

I mean I will stand by these words, "Quality can be achieved, but consistency is something to strive for"

I love the fact that Mojang won.. Both because i love Minecraft but also because it now puts a certain pressure on Notch and the rest of the team, to start pumping out more patches and stop taking so many vacations and attending James Bond like parties..

I have faith in Notch.. Hopefully this victory will make him realise how important it is to get serious...

I agree with this man here, there are other games like dwarf fortress which utterly crush mine craft in how much effort has been put into it.
I think most of the hate just comes from that games like dwarf fortress are free and fun but not that many people know about them - heck! I even heard somewhere that notch said he was inspired by dwarf fortress partially at some point!

Of course that said, the reason people like Mojang more than valve etc would most likely be a severe lack of episode 3 and a huge number of crying fanboy's, who will then just turn to minecraft in spite just because it's a popular alternate - I mean no offence to them but it is kinda true that a lot have done that.

I have nothing against Minecraft, I too enjoy playing it from time-to-time. My only problem is the overzealous fanboyism some people hold for Mojang. Sure, they're cool, the game is nice, but developer jesus they are not.

People are butthurt because Valve lost. It's really depressing that we can't see the same level of good sportsmanship from the Valve fans as from the BioWare fans.

Eh as a developer (And purely a developer) I feel Mojang has dropped the ball. Especially compared to the giants they took down. I mean their product isn't finished, has no polish, and is essentially the pc gamers farmville. They've done nothing outside of create a repetitive (albeit addictive) sandbox, where you have no real goals or objectives. And sold it to the masses of 'gamers'.

I'd hardly call Minecraft even a drop in the pot compared to Nintendo's long standing franchises most specifically. (I mean seriously Pokemon was far more addictive, and even that had more goals, and a better story line.)

It's great Mojang is doing well, it's great when all indie developers do well. But to have them win a contest of superiority between developers is just laughable at best.

I mean seriously, Minecraft is just a larger version of Farmville if you break it down. Except at least Farmville has a leveling system, and reward system lol...

But everyone loves to hate on the big guy these days. It's much 'cooler' to root for the little guy.

So much hate because there are so many homers. Minecraft, and by extension notch/mojang, suffers from "excessive ballwashing syndrome."

Basically they did something awesome, alot of folks appreciate it, and then a bunch of people started going totally overboard and calling him the best deveoper with him only having one game to his name of any value and that one only being less than a year old to boot.

Yes I love minecraft. I think it is neat that Notch made it the way he did. It's nice to see someone succeed at following their passion. Is he the best ever? Probably not.

In the catholic world, after the pope dies he is not allowed to be considered for sainthood for 5 years. Then someone HAS to make a case against it, even if he were to single handedly cure AIDs and broker world peace, then save the whales.

Unfortunatly the interwebs doesn't really do this so people jump on the bandwagon pretty quickly. Think back to things that were popular, go google memes or something. You'll find there is a whole lot of boom and bust.

The more folks homer it and tell everyone its the best thing ever, the more ardent the opposition is gonna get.

So there you go, a quick peek into internet psychology.

Because Mojang isn't like Nintendo in that they can release the same game for each series every year and sell like crazy, considering that they (Mojang) has only released one game that is likely never going to be finished.

Do they deserve praise for what they've done? Yes, but in moderation. Do they deserve all the hate? Absolutely not.

Also, people apparently are of the understanding that "indie" means "good". It doesn't, not always (a lot of indie games are good, though). Not every major developer out there is just cranking out mediocre games to try and sell them, just most of them (I can't think of any off the top of my head, but I'm sure they exist).

Just wondering why i keep reading about people hating mojang for beating valve and saying that they 'shouldnt' have beaten Nintendo and Valve. My question is why shouldnt they? The people who voted for Mojang probably believed that in the past year Mojang's acheivement was more impressive than what Valve did in the past year. Now, while Steam is awesome, I dont recall anything in the last year that Valve did that had as much of an impact as Minecraft did. Its not even finished yet and it still made a ton of cash. (my bet is that it never will be finished. but thats a whole different story)I mean hooray for Portal 2 coming out and hooray for half life 2 episode 2 and hopefully a third that will hopefully be released before i die, but is it really fair to count the entire breadth of a studio's career in a yearly contest?

Its because Mojang hasn't even finished a single game. Minecraft is an unfinished buggy product, compared to the fact that valve revolutionized the FPS genre as a whole.
I thought that title belonged to Bungie since they introduced the trigger button on the controller as the firing of the gun button in Halo: CE or is that jsut for the console FPSes?
Half life: 90s.
Halo: 2000s.

Halo ripped off many things from Half Life, and passed as "innovative" to the consoles.
i´m sorry, i dont mean to flame or start a fanboy war here, but... what did Halo ripped off Half Life??... the only thing i can think about is some enemies, but the combat mechanic, enemy AI, weapons system, story, regenerative health and cut scenes have absolutely NOTHING to do with "Half Life", and most of those things are what regard HALO as the game that revolutionized the FPS genre, HUNDREDS if not THOUDSANDS of people played the game and loved it, after it, EVERYONE wanted to be Halo

so no, i dont buy your previous assertion, even more, i think you didnt even played the game if you think it "Ripped off" Half life, apples and oranges.

I love minecraft and Mojang but I never voted for them.

They still havn't released a finished game. Minecraft has only recently entered beta and I don't vote for things before they were finished.

I also disgree with people voting for deveoplers based on games finished many years ago in an annual competition; things like this should be used to showcase the developers accomplishments of that year.

I normally care (much) more for gameplay than i do for graphics, and i really like the concept of dwarf fortress, but i'm not too keen on memorizing a massive set of symbols before i can play a game. I'm sure that once you get used to it it's like reading the code of the matrix, but learning the code that well just looks like such a daunting task.

You may burn my at the stake for this, but i would sooner play minecraft than dwarf fortress because (dare i say it?) minecraft has better graphics (personally i never thought i'd hear (or see) myself say that).
Yes, because it's not like that's easily changed or anything.

The massive keylist and all the intricacies of just getting the fortress running is far more daunting.
Oh, well thank you! I may actually give this game a try now. After learning to play Civ IV from scratch (took me at least a week) i think i will be able to manage dwarf fortress.

Lol i feel silly now that you've shown me what is essentially a texture pack and now i'm willing to try the game. But honestly that wall of symbols is very intimidating for a newbie.

*edit* oh yeah, if dwarf fortress is as complicated as you say it is, then it's completely understandable how minecraft could still be more popular than it even if they were equally well known. Except for the fact that you need to open a wiki for all the crafting recipes in minecraft, it's still a very simple game. It's very easy to get into and still manages to have depth despite the simplicity. So basically minecraft is just that much more accessible than dwarf fortress but i would like to be proven wrong on that (like increase the fame of dwarf fortress and see how many people pick it up).

Don't feel alone. The combination of garish colors and the ASCII characters gives me a splitting headache.

Also, here is the wiki. You will need it.
