I want Zelda to end. Two good games in a series of, like, 12... Unacceptable. This is just my opinion of course...

I'm almost sure that Yahtzee is one of the reasons for the JRPG bashing.
Now in all fairness some of us have been hating crap storytelling, generic characters and turn based excel based combat for years.
Like wise myself, couldn't stand JRPG's long before I ever heard of this site or Yahtzee.
i must state my agreement, i never understood jrpg's(like final fantasy), and i have tried, for a long time i thought there was something wrong with me since allot of jrpg's had such high ratings(on gamespot, back in the day where i took everything gamespot said with unquestionable loyalty, well almost) the only thing yahtzee influenced my opinion in, was that there was not something wrong with me, but rather something wrong with them(jrpg players) and that makes me feel good about myself, like watching an american talkshow(jerry springer, dr. phil and the like)

Also you never see a "When will Elder Scrolls end (6 games and counting)" or "When will Might and Magic end (god knows how many games/spinoffs and counting)" personally I think it's just Yahtzee inspired and poorly informed bandwagon jumping.
I think Might and Magic is assumed to last forever, also, it was on what 6? back in 2000ish so... it's kind of ahead of everything else bar maybe final-fantasy and mario which are also assumed to last forever, or if not forever untill people stop buying them.

Anyway, the differance between alot of established long running series and some of the series which have only recently gained 4th or 5th installments is this: The long established series are often different in either story, gameplay or both between installments. Indeed with the Elder Scrolls series the game is in fact not about (or at least shouldn't be about) the story at all, as a free-roamer the series, the 4 main titles anyway, have been about putting you in a world and letting you off the leash. Thats one of the why the unpleaseable Elderscrolls fan-base produced quite as much hate for the last installment.

This goes for:
Final Fantasy
The Elder Scrolls
Might and Magic (I think)
GTA

Things like Metal-Gear Solid have one long over-arching plot. The game is often mainly bought for the story, for the characters. When extended far to long the plot will become increasingly strained and incomprensible, especially to newcomers.

The other problem is when the gameplay changes too-little or not all between installments of a particular series. This, not the length, is why people complain about final-fantasy games. The final fantasy series (and JRPGs in general) have almost not changed at all since their inception, this is fine in Japan when new stuff often doesnt sell on the game-scene. However to a western market, which has experienced massive changes in gameplay in the last 10 years or so playing exactly the same game as you played 10 years ago, albeit with better graphics covering it, can be a bit jarring.

Compare the average JRPG's changes in gameplay over the last 10 years to the differances between Baldur's Gate and Mass Effect and the jarring differance becomes especially apparent. It also highlights a more general problem in gaming these days that isn't actually indicative of any particular series and many, including all of the ones you cited are guilty of. This is: the lack of new IPs. There has recently, actually for some time now, been a painful lack of new and interesting games not tied to a previous series. It's for this that I salute BioWare for Mass Effect and their up coming fantasy IP game (Dragon Age, or something, I think it is) which, while similar to their past games was and hopefully will be new and interesting enough to be enjoyable.

Of course, some people like things staying the same. I however don't so I'll stick with Final Fantasy VII and a motley collection of newer IP games untill the series produce something new.

I care about long-running series ending because I want great developers to pour out more originality on new franchises. I'm not saying they CAN'T make new franchises while making long-running series, I'm just saying that it definitely limits them.

Like I said: Yahtzee is one of the reasons.

And not every JRPG has crappy storytelling or generic characters. The only series which comes to my mind when I hear that is Final Fantasy.
All of this reasserts my thought that nobody on these damn boards has played the Suikoden Series... Better Characters and Storytelling than any Final Fantasy game. Battles are okay but the interface is godaweful, as is the level design in some places.

I don't care, and i follow my long tradition of not caring by not posting in this topic...

Oh, Shi--

But seriously, i'm in total agreement, i actually don't mind most games, sure some of them have been going a lot longer then they really needed to, but what can moaning about it do?
besides jack-shit.

Yahtzee, i don't think is responsible for the opinions on this site, i think he was a catalyst for a majority of people suddenly voicing their opinions.
and the other portion of people are just following the example because they think "Yahtzee is so cool! i don't understand about 2/3rds of what he says, but i'mma hate these games too!"

I'm with you, but isn't what you're doing exactly the same? Why are there so many of X that are all the same, but I don't have to buy/click on?

I honestly don't care whether they stay forever or fade out. if they are a good series, they will continue (even if it is just on the coat-tails of their more-successful early games), and if they stop holding promise, they will fall by the wayside. That may be more black and white than the issue necessarily is, but I don't follow most of the games that people are talking about, so none of it affects me.

So yeah, why make such a big deal about long running series?
Long running series aren't inherently a bad thing, except when capitalism gets involved a bit too much. Then you start getting sub-par games based on fan service that sell only due to brand recognition. This has especially been getting out of hand the past few years and in no small part (IMO) due to EA's rapid expansion and acquisition of gaming developers and franchises which they then milk with rushed and unfinished products.

Granted, the fair question would be: If a studio can't pull off a good game with an established IP, why expect them to do any better with a brand new project?

I chalk it up to people generally seeing sequels coming over and over again and figuring those games are drawing funds away from new and original projects...

"I hate this game! Why doesn't everyone hate this game? Why aren't I more right?"
I love this quote. It's funny, because it's so very very true.

I mean, I can't stand most JRPGs (Including the Final Fantasy series), I hate fighting games, I don't think Starcraft is super awesome (Never did...I was always a Total Annihilation guy), and I think most MMOs are a waste of time and money.

BUT, I can see why some people would like them! It's all opinion. You don't like something? Fine! Some people obviously do, or they wouldn't be popular. And I totally agree with Pedro that everyone who starts a thread about how they hate a series or type of game are just trying to get some affirmation that they aren't the only ones.

Unfortunately, most of us (Including the ones who might even agree with an OP) don't CARE that you don't like them. Keep it to yourself, and stop clogging the forums with 'Who else hates this?' threads that have all been done to death.

I only played Suikoden IV and I enjoyed it. The number of available characters is almost frightening.

...And that's the worst game in the series. Try V if you can find it, it's a lot closer to number 2, the best game in the series.

I don't give a toss if a company can keep an IP afloat for decades; surely the end product of good games justifies that. I won't demand for a series to end, I'll end it for myself by not buying any of the games.

Exactly, Vote with your money people, if that doesn't work the series was never meant to end and you're just a troll.

I don't care if they go, I do care if my friends don't stop fucking going on about them.
Seconded. Make all the JRPG's you want, and play them all you want... just stop trying to convince me that I'm going to like them. I'm not. That's ok with me. I don't like coffee, either. Doesn't make me wonder why they don't stop production of it. And my friends don't come over every time a new flavor of coffee comes out to convince me that THIS one will make me like coffee.
