Why walk when you can run?

So a thought has been going round in my head recently, slightly inspired by the latest 'You know you've been gaming too long when....' thread when i thought game characters obviously run everywehere to save time having to wait for the tediously slow walking pace, now the reason they can run all day long is they dont get tired.

But the thought that occured to me is why not run everywhere? I personally do alot of walking to lectures/social stuff/shops etc and none of them are affected if your alittle out of breath when you get there the only difference is that your in alot better shape and you save alot of time.

Ofcourse i'm not saying run as fast as you can else you'll arrive covered in sweat and people wont really want to be near you, but for every walk where you arent going to a date/football match/place where being abit physically tired is going to affect you why not stay at home for 10 minutes extra and run instead?

So anyway, your thoughts?

I have a heart condition. Running everywhere would probably result in death.

No real reason not to, I suppose. But walking is much more pleasant to me; gives me time to enjoy the getting there.

ADDENDUM: Also, why run when you can dance?

Social norms. Skipping is a really energy efficient method of moving, you never feel tired but you move 3 times qucker than if you were walking. The only problem is that you look like a moron.

I do run now and then, for no other reason than to remind myself that it doesn't matter if people think I'm a weirdo.

Excellent point.

Also, if I may be so bold,

People would think I'm strange.

May as well not prove their theory even more than I currently have.

I'm not biokinesiologist or anything like that, but wouldn't the act of skipping actually be less efficient in as much as the expenditure of energy is sporadic? Or would the lack of expenditure over the intervals counteract the bursts?

Is it sad that I had exactly the same idea once based on exactly the same concept (game characters running to save the tedious walking) and then went ahead and tried it? I found there was a fatal difference between game characters and me. My backpack and inventory of stuff was not weightless nor could carry as many items, and it bounces around and hurts your shoulders to run. I resumed walking again.

Well, personal hygiene mainly, and you'd look like a twat. So I'd rather walk.

Dog trainers in the army don't have a choice, I've heard. They have to run everywhere. Being caught walking isn't pleasant.

This is what happens when me = overthinking.

In essence, wouldn't the act of skipping, with several large pushes forward and stops, cause your body more strain by way of having to repeatedly overcome inertia to change your state of motion?

I'm not sure, but I always feel that the momentum of skipping saves quite a bit of energy, I feel out of breath but I never feel tired. Not that I skip alot mind you.

You can't observe your environment as well if you are running everywhere. You'd also tire out after a while.

I only run from place to place when I am late for something, which is not often.
