Yesterday i finished wonderfull 101 and it got me thinking about the subject of hype.
To elaborate why, the climax of that game just blew me the fuck away.
Very minor spoiler warning
I was sittin on the couch going Aaaaaaarrrrrgghhhh and mashing the buttons in the final QTE to the point that my girlfriend looked at me like I was having a seisure. Afterwards I even felt kind of exhausted.
Today i was thinking back on this at work and wondered why i was so invested in that scene compared to other games. The God of War 3 finally was similary loaded in epic QTE's but left me completly cold. The cryisis 3 showdown had pretty much the same scale but I never realy got invested.
So I wondered, what types of games make you feel realy hyped and how do you think they accomplish it.

Please dont forget to warn before spoilers.

I originally thought this thread was about what type of games before they're released do I get hyped about, but it isn't. But in that respect, I always get really hyped when a franchise is getting a new game for the first time in a long while ( ex. Doom 3, Twisted Metal, Street Fighter IV, Killer Instinct, Wolfenstein, and if they were to make a new Mario Paint, I'd buy a WiiU tomorrow).

Hype from playing the game? Honestly, there's nothing more satisfying to me than winning a close hard fought battle in Street Fighter. Never has a game brought me from tossing my controller in frustration and anger to jumping out of my chair in celebration.

Well since I finally got Skullgirls on PC and is thankfully NOT dead online I can safely say it's perfectly hype as fawk. Even just blocking feels like it has some weight to it because the sound design is nigh on perfect. The voice acting is the best I have ever heard in a fighting game. I have even yet to hear one irritating line.

"Transform! Metamorphosis!"

So far it looks like i'm the only one playing the Filia Master Race online, granted it became clear to me last night that Filia really needs an assist but fuck learning another character! I will manage.

Anyway, based on my 15ish games online, teams vs solos work out one of two ways:

1: The solo wrecks the team through overwhelming damage and health differences

2: Solo gets wrecked by bullshit assist/point character synergy. Basically Peacock + any assist ever = QQ

I was getting extremely hyped for Gears of War 3, mostly because I loved the gameplay of the series, and the story wasn't that bad. I even devised a theory that Gears of War 3 would have a bang and lone squad against the world feel, because Gears of War 1 had some chilling horror esque moments, and Gears of War 2 had the whole "Stand up and unite" feel to it.

And... well, it had a bang, it's just that said bang was shit. Single-handedly tarnished the story with one of the worst endings I've ever saw in a game. It's not as fun as GoW 2, and it doesn't have as good an atmosphere as GoW 1, especially because the Lambent weren't wannabe-Floods in 1 and 2 and the female characters didn't highlight the fact that they were women all the time. Gameplay wise it was fine, which is partly why the Multiplayer is so good but, no, Gears of War 3 was a massive let down. Gears of War: Judgment, however, has gone to a more Modern Military Shooter style of gameplay but it's still an improvement over 3.

Gah The Wonderful 101 is making me want to get a WiiU. I still want to wait for Bayo2 and X to be released but it's making the wait harder >.<

OT: I've been on a Tales of binge, and some of the major twist in there makes me go OH MY GOD I CAN'T BELIEVE WHAT JUST HAPPENED! Not to mention the foreshadowing so you do believe it! Like the end of chapter 2 in Xillia

When they fire the lance of kresnick and it tears open the barrier around the world and lets the other side invade. Which at first looks like Aliens even though I knew where they were from.
Or the end of chapter 1 in Tales of the Abyss
When Luke finds out he's a replica. Him nuking the town was obvious, but learning he's only 7 years old explains a lot about his behavior.
The Tales of games do it by their story and character interaction. I enjoy it and huge twists that seemingly come from nowhere.

If you want to have gameplay only hype playing Metal Gear Rising was exciting the entire way through. Part of it was playing Platinum's and Kojipro's love child, the other part was being an unstoppable cyborg ninja. It also had the triumph over challenge. While the Metal Gear universe in the game isn't as big as I wish it was, it still has unlockables and Easter eggs and still plenty of story and dialogue.

Any well-designed platformer is sure to get me hyped. Just the feeling of pulling off all the maneuvering around the environment, especially if it is done in the fastest way possible, is still possibly the most enjoyable a game can get for me. Of course, relying on player input is key, as just holding down the universal "do necessary platforming move" button and watching your character perform the moves (ex. Assassin's Creed) completely takes away from the fun of it.

Oh yeah i completly feel you on gears3. I was playing the last boss and... I honestly can't describe what happened, everything that was needed was there but I wasn't hyped in the slightest.
Minor spoiler.
Also the whole locust queen situation was resolved as if the writer just thought "ah fuck it, lunch time." after her final monologue.

It's very rare for actual game climaxes to actually be climaxes IMO. I believe it works only when you really feel that all the elements of the game just come together at one point, and you get the feeling that everything is hanging by a threat and your the one pulling.

I also realy get hyped over fighters(specially sreet fighter). Theyr the only games wich make me feel like my opponent is right next to me, even though im online. Probably because of theyr gameplay is designed to make you mentally connect with the enemy, then use that to make them feel like you brainhacked them.

I usually get super hyped about new games in my favorite franchises more than anything. It is probably a good thing I'm not a games journalist of some kind since I would have to wait to play an original IP or game from an unfamiliar series to get me excited to play more.

As for specific games I get excited for, any new Zelda game, even if it does not live up to expectations, with respect to Will Rogers, I haven't met a Zelda game I didn't like.(except for the original Four Swords)

New Pokemon games, especially X and Y are filling my hype meter up to maximum capacity at the moment.

Pretty much everything I've ever felt the need to buy on day one.
Seriously, when I see something that interests me, it becomes my entire world until it comes out.

I always get hyped for a new Gen of Pokemon. Every big fan does. Just today I pre-ordered a Machine for Pigs. I think what got me so hyped for X and Y is the fact that they've revealed so little for once. I'll go into this Gen hopefully knowing nothing about most of the Pokemon I see. Everything will be so un-premeditated that I'll probably see a bug(my favourite type) and instantly train it, no matter what. I'll spend much longer in areas than usual, looking for new Pokemon. I'm trying to encourage my Pokemon-loving little brother to come along for the ride, but he's being weird. I'm giving him all sorts of speeches, trying to pass on the hype disease. We're even doing a playthough of HG/SS together. He loves Pokemon, gawd-dammit!

I was very late to the party with Amnesia. Basically as soon as I had finished it I found out a sequel was coming out in a matter of weeks, so since I loved the game and played through it twice, I'm super hyped for the sequel seeing as the Amnesia experience is still so fresh in my head, so I can remember everything I love about it. And this time, I'll get to experience the sequel with all its other fans at the same time, so there's discussion value.

Erm I think I worded my topic headline wrong. This thread is more about wich types of games just get you super hyped up while your playing, then wich coming games your particulary exited for.

Sorry for the confusion.

I mostly play platformers like mario and dk country returns because theyr the only type of games I can play with my girlfriend(one day i swear by balrog ill make her fighting gamer).

But i agree it does feel awesome when your on a run and nothing the game throws at you can stop you.

Everything from Platinum Games. Metal Gear Rising in particular. Those boss battles with their soundtracks that escalate along with the fight are fucking EPIC.

Also boss fights in the Souls series. Those fights get the adrenalin pumping.

The climaxes of all Mass Effect games, yes that includes the third one, had me on the edge of my seat. They were just so epic my eyes were glued to the screen. Though yes the third was a let down in the end, the build up was without a doubt just awesome.

I actually think that's it for me. Queer, thought I would have more.
