the girl i'm dating has a really old laptop that she doesn't use much because she has epilepsy and computers cause her to have seizers after too long on them. so she isn't really computer literate, a few weeks back she got a new internet provider and apparently their wireless is set up such that norton antivirus will stop it from working so they uninstalled it from her computer, i have since recomended her to knock some skulls over this stupid idea, anyway, she got a virus and her computer crashed. well she got it working again but it crashed again and when someone looked at it for her they told her the fan went out and her hard drive got burned in some areas. this idea sounds really suspect to me, i'm fairly versed in computers and i've never even heard of this being possible, i mean if it got hot enough to burn sections of her hard drive the processor would have melted and leaked out the sides right?

now i havn't had a chance to look at it myself and most of this is over the phone from her so i can't guarantee it's all acurate because she just doesn't know most of the vocabulary, but back me up on this there is no possible way for a hard drive to overheat unless you put a flame to it right?

Actually sounds like the tech is right. Hard drives over heat all the time, open up your case and try touching it with your finger after a long session of gaming, laptops do not have proper airflow in them and they build a lot of heat up they just cannot get rid of unless you get the lap coolers and all that crap that will make it the size of a desktop anyways. I burn at least 1 of my HD out every year if not more often due to use and age. Your CPU will not melt out the sides it will overheat and fry out the transistors and if it does get hot enough it will melt parts of your MB. Everything you described though is a classic case of overheating. Best thing to do is throw it away do not try to salvage it and she can get a cheap ass laptop from best buy or even ebay it.

If you really have a hard on about fixing it you could try a new cpu fan and HD but more than likely your cpu is just toast and if that happens the parts will cost you more than a low end laptop.

my plan was to give her one i have left over since i got a new one for christmas, but to clarify we're talking about using a laptop for internet and word processor, she doesn't game, i mean she has to take a break from it every 15 minutes she can't really get into gaming, i will say she leaves it on all the time but closes it when she isn't useing it which is most of the time, we're talking like maybe 8 or 9 hours a week.

if what your saying is true i guess it's possible it just doens't make any sense i mean i've never come across this problem and i've run hard drives outside my computer sitting on my desk in order to salvage old files onto a new hard drive and never heard of it, but i guess my experience is more with desktops than laptops i've only had a laptop about a year.

Give it another decade and you will melt, burn, light on fire short out and generally fuck something up in your pc if you are a enthusiast. Also its electronics overheating and sometimes fire is a real possibility, the motors that run the HD can get hot but if their heat sinks are clogged with dust , short or get to much voltage into them they will get hotter than hell and start a cascading failure into other parts of your computer.

my laptop's power box melted into itself and burned out the cable. so it might happen.

we only found out the cable was screwed when we "fixed" it by cuting them

Speaking from someone that works inside the laughably self-proclaimed electronics industry, your hard drive should not crap out once every year. If it does, then you are doing some very bad things to it. Things that should not be witnessed to in front of blind children...or you could be trying to push it past its comfort zone.

Note for the zealous gamer: Do not count on a laptop as your main gaming rig. It is just a bad idea overall, and even with the addition of upgradable video card slots, it simply isn't worth the money, time or frustration.

There are mainly three causes of overheating.
1) Pushing the processor past its limit by forcing values (commonly known as overclocking.
2) Inadequate fan speed or airflow (cooling in general).
3) Outside sources of heat or faulty components.

I once had a customer that sent in the same HP Pavillion roughly three times and complained about the chasis feeling hot to the touch. Said customer forgot to mention that the imbecile was putting this thing down on top of a wool blanket on top of his lap. As you can guess, the blanket soaked up the heat.

To the original poster, the fact that it crashed, then you guys forced it to start again and again, upon which it kept crashing leads me to believe that the laptop was being powered on without the fan, which is where your burning originated from. Any computer that is powered on without a working fan/powersupply will immediately commit seppuku out of its safety tolerance if it happens to be working in the first place. If it's a laptop with the fan attached directly to the power supply (like in a pc), you need a new power supply for sure and that's what crapped out on you in the first place, otherwise, the fan just probably blew.

It happens more than most people think, and if you doubt me, search the internet for people who have complained that their lcd monitors, which have no moving parts, started smoking and caught fire. You will find them. They have to exist cause someone won't stop sending in this garbage to our little junk shop, ie: LG. I don't think that any of us could give you an accurate description of what might be at fault just from what you have told us as laptops are very proprietary and every single one has a slightly different design. My advise to you is to see if any warranty still exists, either with the company or the individual part manufacturer, then if you want to front the cash, send it in to an authorized repair center or some place like Gigaparts before you throw the whole rig away. Laptop parts break. It happens. If you were to replace your laptop after every little mishap, you'd be a very poor person in the long run.

Don't be too worried though, it is far more likely that a component burned out near the hard drive and scarred the outer casing. If the hard drive itself was going bad, you would smell it. You would smell it in a heartbeat, and the smell would not be mistakenable for burnt toast. It smells a bit like sulfur and forest fires, with a touch of dust.

If the laptop is too old for repair, then maybe it is time to get a new one? Ubid, ebay, and entry-level business laptop deals are always a good start. From the sound of it, this girl does not need to be using the laptop for anything excessive anyway.

Good luck to you.

Oh, and if there is anyone out there that runs over their laptop a month before the warranty expires: Stop it. It isn't funny and we can see the tire marks.

Well, it's a little funny..

well we know the cause it's just the explanation i heard kinda sounded supect to me. for the record this is the first i've heard of it. yeah i can bet she was probably just restarting it over and over again and if the fan crapped out like she told me that caused some problems, yeah it's at least 4 years old hand me down laptop so i'm just gonna replace it for her. but as i said if it was a fan problem i've known processors to be much more sensative to heat than the hard drive, and once that had fried it seems that would have failed completley and not given the hard drive enough time to overheat and scorch, "in some sections" as it was described to me.

also i'd like to point out that i've owned and operated a computer since i was 14 and worked as a computer tech for a month or so at a company, of course the newext computer they had there didn't have enough power to run xp. so i know a thing or two about computers i just wanted some more opinions about it.
