I have had lots of people give me tons of advice on tons of different things throughout life and one of the weirdest but best pieces of advice I have ever been given is "shit happen". It is just two words, it actually says very little and solves so much but honestly I don't know where I would be without it. Crap happens sometimes and all you can do is deal with it and move on, dwelling on issues you can't solve or don't like the options too won't get you anywhere and you are only wasting your time.

What weirdly good advice have you guys ever received?

"Don't die."
"Don't hold your breath!"

I'm at the point where I am really agreeing with everyone who says if you don't enjoy what you're doing, just don't do it. Screw having a stable income, just find what you enjoy and do it and everything else will fall into place.

... I just need a bit more money in my savigns account before I do that.

"Arguing on the internet is like counting blades of grass in a garden". Now, if I could just remember that...

Another was "don't be afraid to ask questions". Since the kind of situation where someone just assumes you know what they know happens so often, that advice comes in really handy.

Man up. Again its two simple words that mean a lot. Someone acting like a pussy tell them to man up and get on with it.

Heres some advice I made up: You will spend your entire life being a toilet. Taking a lot of shit from a bunch of arseholes

Not that I agree with the message in this satirical Op-Ed from The Onion, but the sarcasm helps to bring some basic truths to light:

"Don't eat yellow snow", has kept me clear from at least one embarrassing situation...

This, also. It's really awesome and I tell that to all the children I taught and teach now, that they should always be curious and question their environment.

That's what I always told my students, basically. As for myself? I'm ready to say fuck it, sell most of the stuff I own, pack the rest up, and then go travel until I find somewhere/something I'll be happy with. ... But I'm also 30 and have the means and education to be able to find good work when I need to again.

"When attempting to touch something that may be hot or with left over current, use the back of your hand instead of your palm so you may quickly retract your hand" - Family / professors

"If you don't know what the hell to do, do something--anything. It's better than nothing" - From ROTC

"I see too many kids being stupid and driving too close to 18 wheelers or messing with them. Let me put it this way, car vs. 18 wheeler? You. Will. Lose. *proceeds to show us unedited photos of what exactly an 18 wheeler does to a car with a real body inside. Not pretty)" - Driver's Ed

"If you can pretend to know what the fuck you're talking about, people will believe you, teachers will be impressed, and good things will happen to you." - Random friend. Always scored high grades in verbal / political / sociological classes after learning that.

"Also assume that whatever someone is saying is just bullshit too." - Same friend. (But what if this is bullshit too? Oh no...)

"Asian girls have tempers. Be very careful." - My friends, my family, and I also learned this from my ex-fiancee. Not that it's always true, but a general suggestion that should be considered. Oh man...

I prefer the more direct advice regarding arguing with people:

Don't argue with a fool. They'll bring you down to their level and beat you with experience.

"Nobody cares".

My dad told me this one . No reason to be shy , or embarassed , no one cares . Do what you have to do , and do it with pride . Don't ever not do anything because of what [ i think ] people will think , because they don't care.

"Who the fuck cares?"

This was less advice and more a general development during my university days. Before going I was socially awkward and constantly worrying that I wasn't popular and whether the things I liked were acceptable or not.

Now I'm socially awkward.
