With the new announcement of Deus Ex: Human Revolution getting an upgraded port to the Wii U (and yes, they fixed the boss fights), it seems this is something that will keep happening for the forseeable future: old games getting an upgrade for the Wii U. On the bright side, it means that the developers can get a second chance to make an improved version of the game they already had, and a new system to play it on. On the downside, this means that these things won't be provided as free patches. So, how do all you feel about this?

I think it's a bit of a joke, really. Personally, I'm not the kind of gamer who replays all that many games or buys much DLC. Once I've played a game through once, I'm almost always done with it. There is no appeal to me in saying "Hey, remember that game you played a year ago? Yeah, now you can play it again with some new control gimmicks and the DLC you didn't want the first time added in!"

Nah, that's a couple games. And let's see: Ninja Gaiden 3 [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ninja_Gaiden_3:_Razor%27s_Edge], Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Monster_Hunter_Tri#Monster_Hunter_3_Ultimate], Need For Speed: Most Wanted U [http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jmZ-I0TexFY], this game, and The Legend of Zelda: Wind Waker [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Legend_of_Zelda:_The_Wind_Waker]. That's 5 upgraded and Improved Ports for games.

Now, I generally agree with you. But, I don't agree with the bolded part. Touch Screens are not Gimmicks, as the DS has proven. Touch Screens actually create new ways to play. I don't know why people keep calling it a gimmick.

OT: I'd rather it have new games (Which, thankfully it is) then improved ports, but hey, a game is a game. I'm sure someone will buy it.

Oh, I agree that it's not an issue of the control method itself being a gimmick. I, as you, have played multiple games that make good use of touch screen. I even think Wii style motion control is great in a very few select instances. I don't, however, see the point in tacking those potentially otherwise fine control methods onto something that already played perfectly well when the game was initially released. In that sense, being that they exist in most cases as nothing more than a marketing tool, they are a gimmick.

There's also Batman: Arkham City ? Armored Edition, Tekken Tag Tournament 2: Wii U Edition, Mass Effect 3: Special Edition, Warriors Orochi 3 Hyper and The Amazing Spider-Man: Ultimate Edition.

So yeah, still probably not enough to indicate a general trend, but the OP is not completely without basis. He also never actually said everyone is doing it, just that it has happened and will seemingly happen again.

OT: I'd prefer new games specifically made for the Wii U, but honestly I don't see how this is all that different from all those HD collections that came out over the last couple years.

How do I feel about this? Ambivalent.

I don't care that remakes are coming out. I don't really see a problem with them. Until they make it harder and harder for anyone to be interested in making original titles. Then I have a problem.

Eh. It's neither here nor there.

I would expect this is targeted more at people that didn't play these already.

I mean, if you didn't have any of the other systems a game has been released on, why not?

Of course, it does seem a bit annoying if it means problems in the older versions don't get fixed.
(Although some problems seem to be caused by the platform holders too. Microsoft seems to be really unwilling to allow free updates on the 360 for instance...)

I think it's fine. Particularly for those who have not played Deus Ex yet.

As for older versions not getting fixed. Eh, whatever. It would be nice, but it's not the end of the world.

I think when developers decide to do that they should do it for all the platforms. Release the updated game or release a patch for it. CD Project did it with The Witcher 2 when they released the console version. That's why people love them and that's why they want to throw money at them. I would even buy the Director's Cut of Deus Ex: HR if it was on PC because I love the game.

They make me need to buy a WiiU. Having to acquire new items through monetary transactions is a negative for me.

Well this just adds to more excitement for me getting a Wii U and this trend of giving them nice ports and unique upgrades just sweetens the deal.

That and it sounds pretty fair to me since the U doesn't ever get other console exclusive games at all.

I think with Ninja Gaiden at least the Wii U version was so good they ported it back to 360 and PS3 so those players would now have the opportunity give Ninja Gaiden yet more money.

Ironically, the one enhanced port that people were getting pumped about playing on the Wii U is now nowhere in sight.

Yep, I'm talking about Aliens: Colonial Marines. Before the game was released, Gearbox were saying that not only would the Wii U versio have by far the best graphics, but that the Gamepad itself would act as the motion tracker, as in the original Aliens film. A lot of people were psyched about just the idea of that, let alone the improved visuals.

Cut to after release, the game's a turd, and that Wii U version is now nowhere to be seen, despite Pitchford saying it was up and running 100% beautifully. I guess that shouldn't be too much cause for complaint.

Still, between them, Ubisoft and Gearbox managed to royally fuck over the February period for Nintendo. Rayman Legends and Colonial Marines were both getting marketed as February releases worth buying a console for. Now Rayman's been kicked into September to die up against GTA, and Colonial Marines is such a shitty game Wii U owners prolly wouldn't get it if it was up on the eShop for free.

Sometimes I do look at how publishers treat Nintendo, and I can kind of see why they're so reluctant to court third-party publishers. Iwata and Miyamoto got royally kicked in the balls by those two.
I don't think anyone's pumped about playing any version of Colonial Marines.

I can see the merit in some older titles being placed on Wii U because of the tablet.
For example, Okami would work beautifully on it.
Ultimately though, I'd rather see something new.
Oh god. You just got me imaginin an Okami game on the WiiU.

I want it so bad now and will never get it.

Why would you do this to me?

If all I had was a WiiU, then I'd think it was pretty cool. Alas, I don't.. and I've played most of these "reboots" pretty much on their Day 1 release. Except for Black Ops, I've never planned on playing that.

Every now and then I look at the WiiU's lineup to see if I have any interest in buying it.. and there really isn't much right now. I'm not a huge Zelda or Mario fan, and the other exclusives are not system sellers. I reckon I'll seriously look into a WiiU by the holidays this year.. they *should* have at least a few decent exclusives, right? But the PS4 comes out then also.. shrug.. and Sony already has exclusives I'm interested in for the PS4.

For me it's nice since I have never had a xbox or PS just Nintendo consoles so I can get my hands on stuff like Batman, Asssassins Creed, Deus EX and on a console that runs them properly :D
So I am very happy about all the porting going on and then there will be all the new games also to play

I'll be honest I don't really see the appeal with this unless you only had a Wii last generation. People picked up most of these games on other consoles/pc a long time ago, and if they didn't most of these games are pretty dirt cheap now. Are a few tweeks/small additions worth paying full price?
