Wii U to be quickly outdated?

This thread is starting to look more and more like youtube comments :/.

Haven't really followed the Wii, neither will I follow the WiiU.

Better Hardware does NOT ONLY mean better graphics... It means better AI for example. Or it could means that all the "epic battles" you would see in cutscenes actually happen in real life... It means Battlefield with 64 players on consoles :p.

Do I think the WiiU will quickly be outdated in hardware ? Yes

Do I think it will flop ? Not sure, because like Vault101 said, i'm not sure who this console is for. But it will have a head start. Even if most of the games for it are already out for other consoles now...

This.

It's like they want the hardcore crowd to return back to the system while not forgetting the Wii fanbase. As such, we have a console that 'feels' unsatisfactory for both.

Personally, I'd be very interested if the controller could be used for portable gaming like a true tablet. As is, the console doesn't peak my interest yet.

Everyone is saying that when the PS3/NextBox comes out, they're going to "blow the WiiU out of the water".

But let's just take a minute of assumptions here:
1: Let's assume the WiiU is maybe a year or two behind the latest PC specs
2: Let's assume the PS4/NextBox will have the top of the line stuff
3: Let's just make the assumption the new systems will just be the old ones with a graphics update.
4: Now let's ignore the price, even though it'd be very clear the other two systems would be more expensive than the WiiU.

How much of a difference do you REALLY think there is going to be? Everyone here seems to be assuming that once the next systems come out, it'll be a repeat of the Wii/360/PS3 generation, but the fact is the gap in technology is going to be a lot smaller this time.

Now am I saying the WiiU will be successful? I don't know. Will it be as sucessful as the Wii? Probably not. Do I want it to be? Yes. Nintendo seems to have learned there lesson from this gen and are trying to fix the problems, which is more than I can say about Sony or Microsoft. But Sony and Microsoft also have another issue. Nintendo had plenty of reason to make a new console. What reasons do they have?

Depends. If they stick to family friendly games like they did with the Wii, it'll make a fortune.

But if they really think they're gonna compete with the new Consoles by trying to copy the big boys with their new games, than yes, it's going to flop.

I think they're going to be able to keep up with the modern releases for two years, before the games become to graphically intense for the WiiU to handle.

Why as "a consumer" do you care about either?

Install base. With a normal system (not the Wii) the more sales = more games.

These are the things I am looking forward to with the new generation.

AI, physics and more things in general happening at one time.
Yeah, me too. I think I'll pass the next generation for now though, and buy myself a new pc.

The one I have now is like 8 years old :p, I bought the xbox360 when it came out and at first it was great and I still play it, but there are some games i wish i could run on PC. I'll probably buy next gen for the exlusives after a while though.

I have a good gaming PC anyway.

The problem is that games won't advance that much until new consoles come as they are all designed to work on current generation systems. No one is going to design a complex physics system then have it only work on 1 platform.
Didn't think about that. Do you reckon I should wait for the new consoles to come out to upgrade my pc ?

The WiiU will sell big if the following game series come out on it in the next 2 years:
A new Metroid game
A new Zelda game
A new adventure/platformer Mario and not some 2d side scroller
A Pokemon Game that is Compatable with the 3Ds

The wiiU will never be the favorite console but it will a heavy hitter. And since the graphics are just a little above current gen, it will last until the ps4 comes out because developers are going to need time to catch up with the next gen graphics and processors. Also if they have a serious surge when it comes to indie gaming library then we will have a hit on our hands.

I wouldn't be too quick to dismiss the Wii U as a competitor, just because of it's processing power.

Nintendo never created state of the art consoles and it has always worked for them so far.
The wii is considered last gen, technology wise and it's by far the best selling console of the 3.
The gamecube was no match for the ps2 and the xbox.
The N64 had to make do with big jagged piramids for 3D characters and we had superior voodoo gfx to compare it to.

Nintendo is likely to sell many consoles, because of their brand name, reputation and lower pricing.

Your third point is incorrect.

The gamecube was more powerful than the PS2. The Wii is the first time they went for cheap hardware, they usually went for powerful consoles.

EDIT 4444 posts, fuck yeah
How do you reckon a gamecube is in any way faster than a PS2? The GC has a slower CPU, a slower GPU, slower memory.
Do you think it's because it has only a little more memory (and additional 16mb of very slow DRAM)?

Give this man a fucking medal. I watched that Gun video and my fucking god, it looks like something like MGS3, and that looked a bit better. Then just look at stuff like RDR, La Noire, Battlefield 3 and Skyrim to see how much graphics have improved. People are just seeing that Nintendo aren't being stupid and putting dual 560s, an 8 core processor and more and thinking "It's gonna be outdated!"

Yea, I wouldn't expect the WiiU to even come close to approaching the sales of the Wii. It doesn't have the same interest level from non-gamers that the Wii had, and gamers will quickly grow tired of owning a completely outdated system (technically all consoles are outdated, but whatever). The success of this console hinges entirely on 2rd party support, which will likely dry up when the next Xbox and PS4 are released down the road. No one wants to make a downgraded version of their game, it's too much work.

I haven't seen much interest in the touchscreen gimmick from core gamers either compared to the motion controls of the Wii.

Who knows, maybe if this console flops (which I suspect it will) then Nintendo will realize they can't thrive on gimmicks forever. Then their next console will get rid of the gimmicks and just be solid, like the Xbox or Playstation. Gimmicks are neat occasionally but they alienate a large portion of your potential install base.

Like all consoles the WiiU will be outdated in the blink of an eye. It's outdated before it is released just like every other console. If they manage to make great and interesting games and manage a good third party support then this console can be a success. Microsoft's and Sony's next consoles will also suffer the same fate. Moving on.

- Backward compatibility with Wii games
This is a reason I will be getting it.

I have a Wiimote+ and a nunchuck but no wii (don't ask). If i get the WiiU I'll essentially be getting both consoles and can play Wii games while waiting for the big WiiU games to arrive.
The backwards compatibility with Virtual Console games is also a huge plus. My GF is the one who loaded hers down with classic games and it'll be nice to play those on the new console without having to pay for them again.

On topic though, why is it such a bad thing to limit graphics exactly? The Wii-U's graphics sound like they'll be on par with/ somewhat better than today's standard. I see it as a way to allow more room to explore with the tech currently available without the added expenditure associated with trying to keep up with the latest and, supposedly greatest tech out there. A lot of modern days look beautiful but they aren't as large or, open as games from days past (yes I played Skyrim but I meant games like modern Final Fantasy titles which are hallways whereas the older ones were sprawling sandboxes with large dungeons and towns).

I'm probably not getting my Wii-U on day one but I will be getting one within the first few weeks/months depending on what's released. A part of me wants to grab ME3 for it but I'll wait and see with that one...I don't have Arkham City yet after all...

Matthew94 already posted some links refuting your points, but to make things absolutely clear, everything you just stated is false with the sole exception being the system memory, which clearly wasn't a huge issue for the Gamecube since Gamecube games frequently out performed PS2 titles graphically. The CPU and GPU were both faster in the Gamecube than in the PS2. Not to mention that the PS2 had multiple cores which worked against it more than anything because almost no one else was really going that route and programming for it was a pain in the ass.

Soooooo.... You all really care that much about graphics? Haha don't play Xenoblade then.

Wii had some of the best games this gen. Wii-U will follow the same path of innovative ideas and using the tech well to make good games. But, you hate on it.

FYI, I work in a RadioShack and you guys really have NOOOOO IDEA how fast tablets sell. This is going to make BIG MONEY.
Yeah because working at a dying store totally validates your opinion....rolls eyes.

For one you are forgetting that Nintendo posted a massive financial loss last year.

http://online.wsj.com/article/SB10001424052702304811304577367243824458530.html

Secondly, totally alienating your fanbase with shovelware, then begging them to come back with a system that barely has better specs then a Xbox 360 is shameful.

Nintendo's biggest problem is that they made all of their money off casual gamers, you know Grand Mas who wont buy more then "Carnival Games" for their Grand children. They made short term money, not long term. They also really aren't that innovative. You can argue their "hardware", really just motion controls, but countless iterations of Mario (which far out number Final Fantasy) is really stale.

I'll say it, I want Nintendo to get out of consoles, and pull a Sega.

compared to my PC the Wii U is already outdated, and my PC isn't even that good
