Wikipedia is one of my favorite sites. I love it and probably always will, but the donations... 6 million dollars is needed for...? That's what I can't figure out. I know it's non-profit, but what do you really need 6 million dollars for?

I know for a fact that it doesn't cost that much to keep a website up. So what does it really need it for? Staff? They must have a really big staff for that much money.

So I'm asking the people of Escapist to discuss what they think this massive amount of money is needed for. The answer is probably obvious, however I don't see it.

For an update in their hardware, that they can store more information and continue to grow

I'm sorry, was that too realistic?

obviously they just wiki-ed it and found out :D but i think its for more storage hardware, and overall maintanence. they also have to get folks to write new code, make sure no one wiki-fitti's the site and also there are places all over the world w/ wiki not just english.

Wouldn't they need all the money just to contain its mass of information?

and to throw sexy parties, of course

From what I gather wikipedia costs about sixty grand a month in bandwidth costs.
Not including staff thereof. Other costs include website staff, administrators, and IT fellas.

Server maintenance and upgrades, bandwidth.....as many people that go to Wikipedia whether they go there on their own or through a search engine that's where the money needs to go. The more people add the more space and resources they need
