What do you think? Being able to control a character in a game by using your thoughts with a sensor that is attached to your forehead is a neat idea, and is currently in development.

Although the technology is not readily available yet, I am already having doubts about it. Though it would be cool to say 'DUDE I JUST KILLED THAT GUY BY THINKING ABOUT IT' I honestly don't think it will be very different then just using a normal keyboard or controller.
One of the quirks of playing on different game consoles, or different games for that matter, is figuring out the controls and getting a handle for them.
It may be possible to be able to do more actions at once using thought response, but that level of concentration is something that most people just wouldn't have.
Though using a game with those controls could boost one's level of concentration, I don't see much practical use beyond that.

Problem with technology like that would be it's first implementation: Military use. I'm sure stuff like that would be in the hands of the army before gamers.

That's a good point actually-at the moment it takes a massive amount of concentration for the people at the moment just to turn left, let alone aiming and firing.

Guess it's a step though to full virtual reality-which I really hope happens in my still younger lifetime. They should (hopefully) be able to make it easier for the computer to respond to a thought, which would still make it a different form of controller, but oh well-just get used to doing that instead.

Something like mind-controlled games has actually been investigated in. And the Universty of East London have even made a small prototype. It's not quite mind control, but it's as close as damn it. Basically, they strap a load of technical doo-dahs to your fingers and measure your heart rate. Then using your mind to control your heart rate (either by making it rise or fall) you can control a rock on screen, making it rise and fall. You see where this is going? The idea of the game is just a little time-waster at the moment, you have to stack a load of rocks one on top of the other to progress to new levels.

I saw this game when I went to an Open Day for the Games course they do. And it was a pretty funky piece of kit, I had the chance to actually play the game, and let me tell you, it's not easy. It's not exactly mind control, but it's the next best thing.

Well, i'd assume it would be pretty hard to concentrate on your character especially when you're focusing on "other" things.

at the moment my favourite thing about games is that they don't require any brainpower. I can see this being incredibly useful for other things sure, but I doubt it'll ever get past being a gimmick.

Sounds interesting, but I'd be a little wary about it. Plus, isn't part of the fun of playing a video game actually feeling like you're a part of it? Shaking the controller in anger, for example, or mashing keys when you're frustrated. I think that's part of the reason why the Wii is so popular...

And the thought of anything being in my head (other than my thoughts) is a little too sci-fi for me. But reminds me of Futurama where Fry has ads sent to his dreams :)

Of course. But by then wars could probably be fought by robots...

Is anyone else thinking that this would work great for handicap men and women? O, I've been playing all my life, la de da de da, BAM! Lose your arm. But you have a mind controller. You can still play almost as good as you were before if you used it, and not to much worse if you didn't really use it. And, if they have this, that is one step closer to virtual realty! That is a valid point.
However, when you can mingle controllers in games like that, there comes an issue of using the easier to use controller.

Like playing with a game cube controller vs. sideways wii remote in Brawl.

If the "Every guy thinks about sex every 5 minutes" theory is actually true, I believe it wouldn't really work. Character would pause too many times.

i think the character would do more than just pause...

im not sure if this would make games more introductory or not, is a step closer to VR, but when you play a game for some time the use of the controler becomes almost something natural where you practicly dont need to concentrate or think to play.

and have to think and concentrate all the time for control a character... i dont know it may could kill the inmersion

Been done, I believe.

I'm sure it will become more and more common. I wonder how it will effect the budding professional gamer scene.
