Apple is almost ready to announce that they will be creating a new premium games section to the app store which will host 20$ games aimed more at the hardcore audience. Do you believe that hardcore gaming will ever take place on the iPhone or iPod Touch? Or do you think Apple is just wasting their time?

i think apple is just wasting their time.
I think NGage showed us that people prefer their mobile gaming devices to be actual gaming devices. Plus the iPhone really isn't suited to be gamed on for a long time.

I don't think hardcore gaming will take place. Things like processing power, price tag (it's supposed to be a phone after all). I guarantee you though that gaming will continue to increase on phones as they do get faster, they will replace future PSP's and DS's but that won't be for a long time.

No. The strength of an iPhone app is it's capacity to entertain for just a few moments at a stretch. To ask the device to be a platform for a game that may require several hours of investment on behalf of the player would result in a game that would hardly break into the wide user base. That said, there are some fantastically fun iphone games such as Cube Runner, and while one can theoritcally play that game indefinitely (if they are a complete badass) the average game seems to take less than 5 minutes to complete.

In fact, most portable games that become highly successful tend to be built around the concepts of packing as much entertainment into a small slice of time as possible (to shorten a play session), while being easy to control (you don't want to steer your casual auidence away, but usually results in dilluted long term gameplay). Even surprisingly deep games like Final Fantasy A2 will only ask a few minutes to complete a battle.

Hmm let's see iPhone games... ... err... ... Maybe... yes but to be fair no.

Apple are not wasting their time because they know just like every other product they've brought into to the world, the people in today's society are stupid and will buy the shiny-est thing they see on the market regardless of price or quality... As long as it's simple and popular it will sell even though the games are crap and are not worth the money to us.

Also I dont think it'll be classifies as hardcore gaming... iPhone gaming cant possibly be as good as that!

Nah, the battery will have to be supercharged because they don't last long already.
Plus it might get uncomfortable after a while. I can usually play for about an hour or so then my finger start cramping up. controllers and hand held systems are a lot better.

iPhone games use crazy amounts of battery and have half the screens of a DS, anything complex is going to end badly.

No. I'll tell you why recently I went to the Bahama's and for the plane ride I did an experiment. For the ride there I only played with my iTouch, by the end of my flight I was ready to kill someone. One the way back I played with my DS, when I landed I was sad that I had to put down my DS and drive home.
You deserve a badge for your services.

I enjoy my iPhone, but as a gaming device? 5 minutes of fun, yippee, I normally play it while waiting in the bank, since I'll go postal anyway in a bank, that and the plus point is I wont get mugged in a bank since people in there have there own money.

Hell no. I don't think many people own an iPhone.
Checking on your profile shows your 19 years old?, I'm 27, the people my age and older tend to have iPhones, the suits tend to have blackberries.

Younger people dont, maybe due to the hefty price tag, not as much disponsable income when it comes to mobile devices.

Hmmmm... Not hardcore, but it is very popular.

The iPhone/iPod Touch don't have the processing power or graphics to ever be hardcore.

Although I could see Audiosurf as a major game for it. I wonder why they haven't done it yet...

Well, Galaxy on Fire, iDracula and Sway already give us some highly polished durable gaming fun, and Kroll and Hero of Sparta aren't bad either. We also shouldn't forget ScummVM and Zodttd's emulators (snes, genesis, gba, psx) which have already kept me glued to the screen for hours.

Long story short: yes, the iphone definitely has potential as a serious gaming device.

i peronally don't like the iphone. to me, the iphone is a mediocre ipod (which is shit enough on it's own) combined with a mediocre phone, that is being sold to anyone who wants to give steve jobs another blowjob. that's why i have a sony mp3 player and a good phone.

No.

iPhone is absoloutley great a doing what it dies best: being an eletronic swiss army knife, and has a really fun selection of casual games. However, hardcore gaming is something you can't really do with an iPhone. Mostly because alot of the time your going to beging doing something else in a minuite.

I like using my iPhone for gaming, though.

what phone have you got?
I used to have a NetMD minidisc player, and a phone, I would always run out of pockets when going out.
