Ok heres my deal,

I love games such as Mass Effect and KotoR. But I absolutely hated BG1 and 2, just found them so boring. Everyone I ask this question to gives me different answers, im still 50:50 on getting this game because of that.

Should I get DA:O or just wait for ME2 early next year? or both?

Me:

1st minute: neutral

1st hour: I dunno, reminds me of Jade Empire(my least favorite Bioware game)

1st full day: Even better than KOTOR

Yeah im just concerned because people say its much like the successor to baldurs gate, which i found to be rather boring to play.

KotoR and ME are more of a action game.

It's definitely more visceral than Baldur's Gate, but it still requires tactics in order to win in combat.

I think you'd like it; the cinematic flair is still there and the story is quite good.

If you didn't like BG then I would say probably stay away. It is a fucking great game but much of the time is spent in pause menus queueing up your next attack so that your group doesnt keel over and die in 10 seconds. You have to keep track of an entire group of people so don't just expect to play your main character and expect the rest of the group to play with any intelligence. So if you are not willing to spend a lot of time figuring out your next move in the pause menu, stay away.

Its much tougher than any recent Bioware game. It has more in-depth and complex combat than Kotor/Mass Effect/Jade Empire.

But why did you find BG boring? Was it just the perspective? Because its isometric, as opposed to "OMG In your face lightsaber ACTION!" (which was actually the same thing as BG only increcibly simplified and dumbed down with all strategy and tactics removed.)

I think you'd hate Dragon Age.

Why are people always going on about tactics? I just play on Casual and don't bother with any tactics, and its still challenging, but the gameplay isn't broken up.

I say that you need to try it for yourself.
There's no way anyone can know if you'll like it or not until then.

Also if you DIDN'T like them then good games aren't for you.

Bioware seems to be the epitome of good games.

My opinion, obviously.

DA: O is a lot like the Kotor games, it bears no real resemblance to mass effect in my opinion.

But I found it very fun.

It just seemed like forever before I got into a decent battle and found people to kill plus all the reading put me off. Im really more of an action RPG person but I do like KotoR and ME a lot. But yeah been what 10+ years since ive tried the game so my taste and patience in gaming has definitely changed.

I might give it a rent on console and go from there.. havent been able to get it from the video store yet, its out every time I go by on my way home from work. I was planning on getting the PC version.

The game I would compare it to is actually NWN2, even though that was by Obsidian, not Bioware. The D&D stuff is still there, just modified heavily and not on screen. The level layout is almost identical, and the core gameplay is very similar, but harder. It's definitely not at all like Mass Effect, except for the plot presentation and the dialogue options/companion interaction. And while its a lot like KOTOR, its certainly less action-y.

Only the dialog is like KOTOR etc, the story telling is definitely ramped up. Other than that, it's essentially a fixed NWN. If you didn't like that, you wont like this. Also if you ignore the tactics screen you're really missing the absolute best bit of the game. If you're skipping the story you're missing the rest of the game.

If you want a click-fest party RPG game... this isn't it. If you're willing to expand your horizons a little and immerse yourself in what Bioware have made, what you will find is an absolute triumph of a videogame. It's definitely not for everyone though.

(P.S. Maybe the tactics stuff is dumbed down on consoles so this might not apply)

If you can't find any other games worth considering buying and you still got time to kill being bored out of your mind?...

Then go for it mate!

I've seen people play DA:O and enjoy it but after a while find it rather difficult even on the medium difficulty. However the game has a lot of cool concepts and features to keep you playing just like if it were an action movie such as extreme blood content, the ability to switch characters and a really good looking upgrade system.
