Will Skyrim be a good place to start?

If it has that difficulty slider thingy, then yeah, it will be. But honestly, I would reccomend getting Oblivion anyway. It's a fantastic game, and to be honest, if you're anything like me, it'll keep you going until Skyrim comes out.

Skyrim likely will be good as a first entry. Morrowind I've given more chances for me not to hate it than any other game, and it thus it has disappointed me in my hopes more than any other game. If you're fairly new to RPGs, stay away from that game. Otherwise, go nuts.

Seriously, I wouldn't have made a poke at you if you didn't include DA2 in that list. DA2 is to RPGs what Jeffrey Dahmer is to the human species - only technically a member, and no one in the family likes to talk about it.

OT: Unless they do something ridiculous(thinking cover-based shooting) with Skyrim, it should be fine for first ES experience, Oblivion wasn't ALL bad after all

Oh, feel free to love the everloving shit out of DA2, your personal preference is none of my business. However, your preference notwithstanding, DA2 is objectively a piece of overpriced shite. If I wanted 5 endlessly repeating areas and idiotic dialogue, I'd go play CoD.

As far as I can tell, Elder Scroll games might reference past events, as a nod to the fans, but usually the stories don't hinge on the previous game's story.

You should be fine.

All the games in the elder scrolls series are standalone, and can be played individually without any prior knowledge of the lore or story. It's all pretty self explanatory.

Skyrim would probably be a pretty good way to start, Oblivion is still great, but the combat begins to feel a bit stiff and rigid after 5 years.

over the years i heard tons of good things about the elder scrolls series, yet I've never really been sure about getting into it. iv'e been reading up a bit on Skyrim, and as it is set 200 years after oblivion, i suppose i don't need to know much of the story from previous games, so the question stands: do you think Skyrim would be a good way to get into the series?

Most of the Elder Scrolls games only mention things from the previous games. Or maybe run into a non quest NPC from one of the other games, or will be in one of the books you can read that says something about the previous times and lands.

But nothing in Oblivion's main story had anything to do with Morrow Wind. And i dont see much in Oblivion that would effect Skyrim. Different times, and different lands.

Game's not out yet. Seems good, but making it seem good is the whole purpose of marketing. Do not buy into hype, the game can be fucked up, regardless of who's making it and what they did in the past.

All of the elder scrolls games are stand alones and have nothing at all to do with the previous ones so you dont need to know any of the stories at all. Playing oblivion first will obviously add some background lore but none of it is actually important. If you got some spare time you could always try morrowwind or oblivion. They are not great games and they have tons of extremely large flaws but the potential that had was amazing.

You cant actually say that DA2 is objectively a piece of shit since that is your subjective opinion and subjective things cant by nature be objective. Insulting certain games that you do not like is extremely childing and makes you look like an immature twat.

no need to stop, some of the COD games had a really good story and i for one enjoyed MW2 and you can hate on me asmuch as you want it was a good game, and the length was fine for me.

OT i started with oblivion then went back to morrowind, and i prefer morrowinds abilities, story and world, but i would have loved oblivions graphics and gameplay controls instead, so ye both games have been amazing and are fully recomended, even if only for oblivions shivering isles sheogorath being amazingly crazy, which i love.

on what you ask yes skyrim should be fine for starting off, now in the words of the allmighty sheogorath "Come back soon, or i'l pluck out your eyes!!"

Every TES game is good, but every new game never fails to piss off people for something missing that was in the previous. I for one am still griefing over the armor changes from Morrowind to Oblivion.

Skyrim will be a great place to start.

Each game holds its own, but gradually improve, so yeah, you're fine starting with Skyrim, then you get the ebnefit of playing the previous entries into the series before the craving begins for a sequel.

No real continuing story, also the game engine is changing quite a bit. So I'd say it'd be a good game to start with.

I still don't get why being able to equip pauldrin's matters...

Extra slots for custom enchantments. Same with boots, gloves and gauntlets being separate, and the ability to wear clothes under armour.

i reckon it will be the easiest to get into yet, as its apparently more streamlined than oblivion.

As long as there's still an entire in game library to read you'll never be lost with the plot. There are books that near enough explain all the events from past games within Morrowind and Oblivion, so I imagine in Skyrim there'll be the already existing books as well as additions which explain the Oblivion Crisis.

Of course it will, every Elder Scrolls title is self-contained with it's own story, it's own setting (hint: It's in the name) and it's own characters.

Every Elder Scrolls game has felt different somehow. I'd say Skyrim seems to be a great intro to you, but don't hesitate to try out Oblivion sometime with a few improving mods.
