Why would a group of atheists be angry about themes of religion in a game that features evolution. Why not attack something else like Oblivion or some other game that has magic.I'm atheist and this doesn't anger me so it makes no sense when they have evolution being made a part of it.To be honest I was expecting radical Christians to get angry.
Well...that's the point. The article only mentions these 'Militant atheists' in passing almost, it doesn't go into any specfic detail as to what they were offended about. Only that there were some discussions, and that apparently some militant atheists were there. *shrug* So...can't really make any kind of judgement about this without knowing exactly what transpired and why.

I don't know why they even mentioned it if it wasn't worth expanding on. However, I will admit that it was quite clever using that little point in the topic title. Nothing get's people interested like the scent of controversy right? Even if it's seemingly non-existant.

Sums it up good if you ask me... I respect your belief's, if you respect mine... You don't like the religious tones in a game? Don't play it!
I'm not going to respect a man who believes his pants are made of laffy taffy.

(unless they are, in which case I will follow this strange taffy man to the ends of the earth)

athiests are just as militant with their religion
That's like saying not eating is a form of eating. It becomes even more ludicrous when you attach an adverb to it. Power not eating. Aggressive not eating. Virulent not eating.

OMG! I can't believe how narrow minded some of you are being, not the majority; i'm not trying to say you're idiots because I've read some very interesting points, like cyberqat, but then some sh*t points from people like demonbuster. Have you ever actually read any of Dawkin's work, he is the definition of ignorance. When he argues he just talks and doesn't listen to anyone else's arguments. He gives atheism a bad name on behalf of some people who just don't accept religion.

As someone above said, if religion disappeared then there would still die hard atheists taking their place, that's just because some people are retarded and feel the need to put everyone else who doesn't agree with them down and people shouldn't let that affect their work. What happened to the right of free speech? If die-hards don't like it, ignore it and tell your children it's wrong but don't go imposing yor views on what should and shouldn't be censored to other people.

Correct me if I'm wrong but I've always interpreted Atheism the word to mean one who disbelieves in a 'god' although now that I've written that I realize I should rephrase it. One who is against religion. There that's better. But it seems to me that the word's been... 'corrupted' shall we say by the principle of common usage and connotation. Someone with no feelings about gods or religions in general but finds christianity as a religion offensive and says so is labeled as atheistic.

If any atheist ever tells another person that they're doing it wrong (in regard to faith/religion) then they do cross over from the realm of atheism as a point of view to atheism as a religion. Religion is what you push on other people and a point of view is something personal. I'm not saying keep your point of view to yourself and never talk, I'm just saying that if you actively criticize something or someone else for faith/religion reasons then you're putting yourself on that level. And then it gets very easy to be labeled as militant.

I've met one such person in my life who was an atheist-as-religion type, and talking with her quickly became an argument because much like in catholic school, she would simply not hear my points, my words were glossed over in favor of more ranting and raving. So are there militant atheists? I'm sure there are, but as was mentioned earlier in this thread, active atheists, even atheist-as-religion types who are active aren't necessarily militant. In point of fact, protesting something to the source of your issue, is closer to being rational than it is to being militant.

As far as definitions of ignorance go, you beat Dawkins by a long way. I can't believe you've read his work and feel that way! 'The God Delusion' is PURELY debating and countering all the religious views that have come before him, he invites open debate, answers questions he's asked and gives reasons for all his statements. Which is kind of his point, evidence, logical argument and reasoning are his shields against religious hypocrisy.

To all here, have you thought what militant atheists (a phrase they've coined themselves and find rather silly btw) would do if they ever seized power in a bid for world domination? Tell me, how DO you force someone to think for themselves.....because that's ALL that is wanted.

To Root of All Evil...

Doogy Rev, what a great retro moment seeing him again!

To the spore interviewee, anyone who uses words like 'brand' to describe anything unless its a red hot metal pole aimed at a cows ass, I personally want to stab in the everything.

As for Spore, I hope it does really well, lets hope they don't go silly with the copy protection and make it unplayable for some people.

As for atheists/religious people, I have no problem with any of them, until they're an 'extreme' version.

Now I wouldnt mind if extreme just meant they went around preaching on a skateboard, but its more just another word for nutjob who thinks anyone who doesnt agree is wrong.

As for me, I'm open to the idea that their might be a god of some sort, but I'm damned if I'm gonna live my life according to someone elses guidebook, I'll just behave myself because it feels right and keeps me out of jail, not because I might burn in hell forever.

If you thought this post was "militant", I suggest you go kill yourself. I heard heaven is a great place, and you wouldn't want to miss brunch with your all-loving creator....
I think that this whole thing about "militant" could come from an innacurate knowledge of the word in English. Maybe some sort of bad translation in the mind of the interviewer.

Because in other langages, like french, for exemple, Militant means somebody that tries to spread his ideas, point or views, etc... without necessarily implying the idea of violence. In french, somebody that is registred in a political party is called a "militant".
The Eurogamer journalist may have thought that the word had this sense in English.
