Will Wings of Liberty alone be able to play any maps that will eventually be created, or will you need the expansions, the same as needing The Frozen Throne in order to play the latest DotA, etc?
If you only need 1 SC2 for all of it, then it seems like a really nice deal for me. I know I will get it just for the map editor alone, but being able to play every single maps in the world would be a nice plus, especially seeing how much stuff has already been created.

probably need all 3, it wouldn't really make sense for them to release it as 3 if they weren't going to sell them all. money is what makes the world go round.
They don't force people to upgrade WoW accounts in order to play, they just lock off the majority of the content from you.

My understanding of it from reading online is the only addition the second and third game are bringning are single player campaigns for the respective races. I'm sure they might throw in a map or two, but it will probably be given to everyone anyway. I cant see how they could change anything to lock people out from the second game on.

As I understand it, it depends on what version of the map editor will be used. If you use the WoL editor, you probably just need WoL to play your maps. But I bet that HotS and LotV will include improvements to the editor (and certainly new units), so...

Hmm... I was thinking about buying the collectors edition (that way I could get the original SC battle chest as well). Wonder if it'll have all three SC2s, or if I'll have to pay about $100 US + $50 US + $50 US to get all three games.

Those campaigns had better be freaking long (20+ missions) or I am going to be very disappointed.

I think first game has 29, with 20-30 hours of singleplayer gameplay. The others should follow suit.

Nice. Hell, that's a good length for an RPG. I just hope they decide not to charge $50 each for what will essentially amount to expansion packs.

I'm sure there will be something in those other SC2 games to convince people to buy them. Even if I respect Blizzard as a company, the fact is that they are now linked up with our Activision friends.

Whatever, just wash your hands.
they say you only need the new games for single player but I seriously doubt blizz activision will stop with just that

So I guess most people are expecting them to release new version of editors as the expansions come out?
Ah, well.. I was hoping they would just go ahead and patch the map editor separately from the game. That'd be awesome.

In general, RTS games tend to be a bit lenient on having expansion sets. Dawn of War II for example allows you to continue playing even if you never purchased or installed the Chaos Rising expansion, but as a result you do not get to play as the new chaos army. Blizzard has also notably ensured that players using a particular set of content in world of warcraft could continue playing as usual, but they were locked out of the new content in the commercial expansion.

That said, because of the culture surrounding Starcraft and games of it's style, while it may not explictly be required (John Funk's statement mirrors my own understanding of the situation), without all three packs playing the game will almost certainly be a frustrating experience thanks to the simple fact that many of the map selections will be naturally prohibited. SC has been a game that traditionally drew a huge number of map makers and custom maps, and said modders often (unwittingly or otherwise) make a map using features that ensure you must have a particular content set in order to execute.
