I have been reading up on a new MMO that I'm looking forward to (APB). My system needed a little upgrading anyway so just as good a time to do it. While doing my research i came across a page mostly filled with people bitching about the subscription fees for the game ($7 for 20 hours or $10 for the whole month). My question to you is do you think it's worth it, or is the game company just being greedy.

Has anyone actually paid it? I like the idea but the only MMO I would pay out for if The Old Republic.

Whatever, just wash your hands.
it might be setup like that for internet cafes, here in the states its not much of a worry but in alot of places they have net cafes so paying for a month might not make as much sense as just buying a few hours

but yeah 7 for 20 hours definatly sounds greedy

Its against my religion to pay subscription fees.
The only reason why I played WoW was because my uncle had an account and he lives in Israel so I could play while he slept and vice versa.

That's a bit much methinks. Not even Actiblizzion charges that type of payments for WoW just a simple 15 bucks a month.

Yeah go for it! 20 hours for $7 is shit but $10 a month is fine. I pay my $15 a month for WoW, but I put a fair bit of play time into it. 50c a day for a game you really enjoy ain't bad. (plus since playing WoW I haven't been buying as many games as I used too, so I'm actually saving money)

EDIT: APB looks pretty sweet!

No, that's the fees for just playing the game on line. You buy the game, you get 50 hours of play just for that, when your in the customization area it doesn't cost any time, then $7 for 20 hours OR $10 for unlimited.

I have friends who don't play too often and can make that 20 hours stretch a few months.

EDITORIAL: My personal opinion is that there are a whole lot of others things that probably wont provide as much entertainment and that will cost me more than 7 or 10 bucks. Bowling, movies, Go karting, laser tag, driving range, renting movies, buying movies, ... etc. I can live with the 10 a month for one PC game and the 50 for Xbox live for the whole year.

MMO's have had subscription fee's since... well since MMO's.

Seriously, they use that money to keep the game running. MMO's are insanely expensive. For example, in 2008 Blizzard said that the total cost upkeep of WoW from 2004 to 2008 was $200,000,000 [http://www.1up.com/do/newsStory?cId=3169949].

Again that was from 2004 - 2008. With how much the game has grown since then I wouldn't be surprised if that number doubled.

So yeah, the game companies need that monthly fee to keep the game running.

Granted that pricing model of $7 for 20 hours seems kind of weak. Especially since there's a $10 a month option.

Um... He said it was 10 bucks a month. I'm Canadian, so I'm not sure about exchange rate down there (though I'm pretty sure we're at least close to on par these days), but I think 15 is higher than 10, and neither seem that expensive.

As far as "is it worth it," the way of answering I call "avoidance" is "Do you want to play it?"

I guess that's quite different.
However, it still doesn't change my answer.
I don't buy DLCs, and those ADD to the game.
This is merely taking out an expected part of the game (Multiplayer) and making you pay for it to get it back.
I may have entitlement issues, but its only because the gaming companies have trained us to expect multiplayer out of the box.

10 dollars a month is pretty standard, if you're willing, go for it.

They're asking you to pay for server maintenance and upkeep, apparently.

I have a vendetta against pay-to-play games, and hate WoW with a pointless rage. APB is pretty sick looking, though. Once I rack up some cash, and land a steady job the streets are MINE.

It's really a to each his own kind of thing, there are plenty of things that one person may agree to while another person will strait out refuse to settle for.

I will agree with what you said about SOME of the download content, Soul Calibur 4, NO i will not pay to use Darth vader when i can see the open slot where he is suppose to be from the very beginning.

$7 = 20 hours

or

for $3 more, 700 more hours.

I think they're trying to mark some people as potential Darwin Award winners.

These days who can tell an MMO from a regular game with a lot of DLC? $7 for 20 hours sounds like a lot until you remember that Operation Anchorage was $10 for 4 hours.

NOT PIRACY. IM NOT GETTING SUSPENDED AGIAN...
...arggggg...
i never really liked the sucription part of MMO's, so I'll avoid them by playing ones that don't need one. My fav. that, aside from buying the game, you don't have to pay for is Diablo 2

I really hope Diablo 3 does have a suscription fee
