I hereby dub a new term! Win-Fail! It's when you fail and win at the same time! It is a complex beast, sometimes they are victories where you fuck up and the victory is rendered hollow, or you fuck up in a way that actually works out very well for you!

A good example would be in Bloodborne when I was fighting Djura (The guy with the stake driver who mans the machine-gun) on top of the church in Old Yharnam. Djura had done a pretty good job of kicking my ass every time I went up to fight him, and that's when I didn't fall off the top by accident. Eventually though I managed to bit him...because we both fell off at the same time. I'm not sure how it happened, everything was so fast, I was rolling to the side, I think he was rolling to keep up with me, and we both took a bit of a tumble. Thankfully the game registered Djura dying and staying dead, and was even merciful enough to leave the time he dropped on top of the church.

So what about you, what win-fails have you had?

Possibly the first time I took on one of the wandering elite enemies in WoW. There are loads of elite level bosses roaming around the landscape in Pandaria, and they were poking my eye out. So I see one i think i can handle, attack it and get my ass whooped.

Eventually I get him down upon which he proceeded to fall through the world. So i couldn't loot his corpse.

Very mixed feelings there.

We already have a phrase for that, pyrrhic victory.
And this happens a lot in TF2 when I play pyro, soldier, or demoman.

I have two from borderlands. Some one challenged me to a dual and shot me with a Legendary rocket launcher and killed himself. I had a shield that had a chance of absorbs enemy fire.

My other win is when I died killing a particular enemy in sawtooth cauldron but my teammates got him. I was host and these were two random people who joined my game and I had never played with them before. Turns out this enemy dropped 12 legendary weapons. Not only did they not grab any weapons they allowed me to choose first. We all got four legionaries. It has been my best experience with the franchise.

Magic the Gathering: Duels of the Planeswalkers...I forget which iteration it was, it was the one where they had the "Planes Chase" game mode.

This occurrence established new rule amongst me and my friends: if we're playing Planes Chase, no one can use the "Life Link Deck" (Ajani's deck that focuses around getting life in numerous ways).

So here's the issue with that particular deck in that particular mode. The deck has three creatures that get a +1/+1 counter every time you gain life. It also has 3 creatures where every time a creature enters the battlefield - for you or your opponents - you gain +1 life. Obviously these two kinds of creatures make a very good combo so that every time a creature enters the battlefield you gain life and your own creature gets a little stronger.

The thing about Planes Chase mode is that the game basically gets to decide who wins, as there's a number of "rule" cards that get flipped every now and then. When a new card arrives, it established a rule while the old card's rule is negated. These can be things like "Creatures don't untap during their controller's untap phase. Tapped creatures get a +1/+1 at the end of their controller's turn." Some times they have an immediate effect which takes place, then a new card is flipped...such as "Destroy all non-land permanents."

So I'm playing the Ajani deck, I've got my guys that get stronger when I get life and my guys that give me life every time a creature enters the battlefield. And sure enough: "Destroy all non-land permanents" comes up, wiping the board clean. The next card that gets flipped? "Return all creatures from all graveyards to the battlefield." Win for me, fail for the game. It was rather late in the game so everyone had pretty full graveyards. I think my three creatures that get bigger every time I get life ended up being at 207/207...which meant that I gained a shit-ton of life due to many creatures suddenly "entering the battlefield" and thus triggering my creature's special abilities. The problem is due to the time it takes the game to resolve each individual health-gain three consecutive times from each individual creature entering the board THEN having to add the +1/+1 counters one at a time, this little ordeal ended up taking 45 minutes to resolve. 45 minutes of just watching the game do it's thing over and over and over again.

I just remember the day way back before steam was a thing when I was playing Day of Defeat 3.1 which was the best incarnation of that half-life mod in my opinion.

Anyways I primed a grenade to have it detonate when I needed it to and tossed it. But when I came out of cover a guy in the nest I was going for shot me with his rifle in and killed me. Still my grenade detonated just behind him at about head level. Not only did it take him out but it also took 5 other people out. Fail for getting shot, win for nailing 6 people with a single grenade.

I was playing beer pong on the weekend. I was pretty drunk too. Opposition threw... ended up in my cup. Dissapointment. I drank the beer, ending up with the ball in my mouth. I fired it from there... straight down the table into their cup! Winner!

As I threw my hands up to celebrate I overballanced and fell on my back.

Well done Watson.
