So I did not realize till this morning that Windows 10 looms on the horizon. In doing preliminary research on it I am failing to see anything that gives this release any merit other than it works to fix what is wrong with windows 8. I am not really finding a lot of talk on what needed improvements this release provides like past OS incarnations offered such as better migration from 32 to 64 bit, higher DirectX support, ect.

So I am interested in seeing some justifications from those who fully intend to migrate to win 10 and why. The overwhelming chorus of "Windows 7 is six years old" really isn't winning me over so far. I'm open to migration, but not simply for the sake of migrating, and certainly not for the sake of making the environment drastically worse (Windows store?!? lol) because it works out better for microsoft.

So any major improvements or new abilities that the OS has, that actually has you, the end user genuinely excited?

DirectX 12 is win 10 only i believe? Also, its free.

Meh, im an IT guy, i want to see whats new and how it works.
I think voice controlled notes/reminders might be very useful to me.
If im not mistaken they will be adding SSH support, so that might be useful.
Also, i heard its better at managing drivers and interacting with a smartphone.

And last point - im soon about to be done with my university. Finally a chance to completly wipe my laptop (i have way too much software installed, i think i have like 5 database managements systems xD) And if im wiping, i might as well try out the new windows.

running the latest release version right now, but gone here from win 7 rather than win 8.

it's 90% good. Everything seems to work out of the box, drivers etc where no more fuss than they ever are. obviously some drivers are still beta so the performance in some games is not everything it should be.

the ones real strike against it is the signing in to your Microsoft account rather than a local account is the default not an opt in. I don't want things stopping working because a server is off line or the internet is playing up on my local machine. easy enough to turn off but it being the default is kind of unacceptable.

Migrating from win7 myself. Basically because I use an SSD for my OS and I understand that windows 10 will have a significant reduction in size from 7 (not necessarily from 8 as that was also apparently a lot smaller than 7). The other major this is I've had a lot of long term minor niggles and bugs and bluh with windows 7 that I'm hoping would be dealt with were I to get the upgrade. Shit like the .net framework refusing to install, some updates just not working and so forth.

It might be optimistic to believe my bugs will just float away, but honestly even just the size reduction will be worth it. Any increase in performance would be welcome as well.

How is backwards compatibility though?

I heard that it should work with almost all Win 7 programs and games.
That much I have read a lot and the concensus seems to be ... do NOT trust the compatibility manager.

I reserved Windows 10 for both my laptop and desktop because why not?

I plan on keeping Windows 7 for desktop (for a while because I have Witcher 3 on it) and upgrade to Windows 10 for laptop.

Both crashes when they are put to sleep (no idea why) so if upgrading to W10 provides easy fix, its definitely welcome.

not had anything break on me yet. gog version of KotOR and Jade empire work fine. GTA V is a little choppy but that could be the driver for the GFX card rather than windows

The start menu has returned, this time full of apps and marketplace ad goodness.
As a PC user who tries to enjoy full access to everything, i'm excited that Killer Instinct and the Gears 1 update are exclusive to it... DirectX12 in future games is also exclusive to it.
It's free too! as an update, for a year, so whenever you need to install Windows 10 in the near future you need to install your previous version, probably download the updates and service packs, then download Windows 10 and so on... and then you'll need to buy it.
On the plus side, more classic PC games will probably become unplayable, as all new Windows releases tend to do.

Sorry about the sarcasm, but the 'updates' in this next version really arn't aimed at me, the PC user, but it's not out yet so we'll see if i'm wrong or not.

Yeah, I'll still wait a month or two just to make sure there are no disasters and any horrible features are modded or patched out.

And I'd be more worried about that if it wasn't for GoG.

I'm going to upgrade my Windows 8 laptop first to see how it is. If I like it I'll upgrade my Windows 7 PC.

Hopefully it doesn't suck!

I'm holding off for the time being as 1.) We have a whole year to decide and 2.)Given what they've said how it's going to be handled it essentially a fully marketed Release Candidate.

There's no rush and right now Win7 is working just fine for me as it is. I can afford to be patient.

Still on Win7 on both my laptop and computer (after it was being nearly murdered by Win8) and I'm on the fence about upgrading. Was thinking about activating it for my laptop and seeing if it provided any improvements but I'm going to wait for the release intial impressions first.

Ditch the best OS since XP for the new one that can't run games for another 3 years?
(That I have to pay for again?)

Sounds like a good deal to me!

I don't know how exactly it's set up, but I have the Microsoft account login setup on my windows 8 machine, and recently moved. Having no internet for a week, it didn't give me any trouble. There certainly might be issues somewhere in the Microsoft services, but it definitely doesn't seem to mess with you logging in.

Whatever, just wash your hands.
Im going to throw 10 on my laptop as soon as it launches, then Ill see about putting it on my laptop. I want to know if it will just do an upgrade install and I want to see just how well it works. Plus my laptop is on 8 and 8 sucks.

Logged into my Microsoft account on both my main desktop and living room PCs on W8.1, neither of them have stopped working or refused to boot in the rare occasion that my internet is down. The MS account is mostly just used to sync stuff like some UI and wallpaper settings, apps and OneDrive.

I installed Windows 10 on my SSD because I just bought a new one. I had some issues with NFTS permissions that broke my windows 7 install. After some finagling I managed to back up my files from my C drive then format that drive. I've been using Windows10 for about a month now.

There's some bugs still, but I'm still on the preview so that's to be expected. Windows10 has a bunch of new features that are really nice. There's better multi-hard drive support which is a welcome. Cortana is cool, and easy to ignore. Microsoft Edge is also super speedy. The new start menu is nice combination of Windows 7 and Windows 8. I haven't touched windows 8 because of a multitude of reasons, but having access to the windows 8 apps (such as weather, the weather app is amazing) and them not be forced into full screen is super nice.

My game performance has improved from Windows 7. I'm using an Intel 4670k, Ati 290x and 8 gb of ram. I gained FPS in Battlefield 4 on all ultra settings and gained fps in GTA 5 by upgrading Windows.

Some bugs are a little annoying right now, but I've not ran into any major issues. I would recommend.
