Now I've decided to finally upgrade to windows 7, and I am able to get my hands on an upgrade version for around ?10. Since this is an upgrade version, I'll need an older version of windows to install it. However, since I'm buying a new computer and selling my old computer to my parents, I won't be able to install it over the windows xp install that I'm currently using. So here comes my question:
Will I be able to use a cd for windows xp which has already been used on another pc as the basis for my windows 7 upgrade without running into any problems when verifying the installation with microsoft?
If that's not possible, would you recommend looking for a cheap old version of windows to upgrade from, or just buying a full version of windows 7?
Thanks in advance for any help.

Actually, it is possible to use a Windows 7 Upgrade key to do a fresh install of Windows. No prior version of windows needed. Just install Windows as per usual, and do a registry hack before verifying the product key.

I have installed Windows 7 three times now on different computers using Method #2 described in this article below. It has worked like a charm for me each time. Apparently there are minor risks (stated in the article), but I've never had a problem.

So, no. XP discs will not work. Just buy Windows 7 Professional/Ultimate[footnote]I'm assuming you're a gamer so you'll want the higher RAM capability.[/footnote] and be done with it. Why not wait a little bit and get Windows 8 for 40 USD[footnote]Got no clue where you live, too lazy busy to check profile[/footnote]? From what I see, it's Win7 with a mandatory texture pack and some weird design choices, but Win8 should play games just fine.
