With Microsoft's new release of Windows 7 I thought I'd look into upgrading from Vista. Well, turns out that the upgrade price is $219.99! No thanks! I'll stick with Mac, which cost me $30 to upgrade. $220 is way too much to ask for an update that will make it what Vista was supposed to be in the first place.

Do other people think this, or am I overreacting?

That's why you buy it OEM at newegg or zipzoomfly. half the price.

also mac OS is upgraded about 4 times as often as windows. It would be like if windows made you rebuy the OS for every service pack.

I think you maybe right but the thing is, they can charge that much and people will still fork over their money.
Welcome to the horrible horrible world of supply and demand, where drug dealers make more then several nurses, teachers or scientists

I feel that Vista was overpriced as it was. The worst part of it was that all 4 versions were on the same disk. So if you bought the cheapest version, the best was still sitting on your install disk.

As for 220 dollars, I would pay for it. But that's me. Although My sister got XP Pro for 10 dollars from college. So I'm hoping I can get Windows 7 in a similar way.

EDIT: They will be supporting XP until 2014. 13 years. I guess when something works, it sticks around.

It's the same if you were using Win2k and XP came out. Except that XP was so unstable that there was no point switching from Win2k to it straight away. Maybe you'll find some resemblances to this situation.

I run Ubuntu Linux. It's free.

And it's a pretty decent OS. Only problem is running some programs that normally work with Windows.

I've had Windows 7 for about a month and 1/2 and it has not given me any problems, it's a very stable and easy to use OS, which is what I like.
Personally, I dislike Macs.

Premium is $119/€80 to upgrade. It's more than enough for 90% of people, gamers included.

I thought W7HP was $119...
That is all you need, I think. I will probably upgrade this xmas.

Off topic- You have to back up your files when upgrading, correct? Or does the upgrade keep your docs/music/pictures/mods/save games/etc?

Best to backup even if it does, just in case :D

Also, I've been seeing versions of 7 going for around £60.

If they can put 7 on £300 PCs, then it can't be over £200 for the software.

I mean, sure there's a super elite pro platinum version, but does it have a lot of stuff that people want or need?

Yes, you need to back up anything you want to keep.
Looks like I will be investing in an external HDD :D
So much stuff to back up...
