No no no. That will never, ever happen. Not only would it make the Xbox useless (which means less money), it wouldn't be possible due to hardware.
I did say it was a rumour, and I was fairly skeptical that it would be true. But how nice would it have been if it were true?

I heard about windows 8 first on npr, and how they want to kinda mimic the ipad's type of interface. after hearing their description of it, i'm dreading windows 8...

I've hated Vista and 7 since the start due to said OS'es being absolute cunts when it comes to retro-gaming, and the arbitrary re-arranging of everything I got used to in XP.

I do like the desktop gadgets though. Convenient things that still don't redeem the shittiness.

I'm kinda hoping I find more to like about 8 than I did about 7. My experience with 7 boiled down to, "Meh, no advantage over XP*, yet more annoying."
Hey wait, 7 had a few advantages, like DX1...

*why no, I didn't care about DX10+. And I still don't.
Ohhhhh... right.

It still made it a lot easier to use more than 2 gig or RAM. Which is always a plus.
I guess I should note, I was comparing it to XP64. ;)

It would be nice for the exclusives. I'm more a PS3 guy myself, but I really wish I could play Condemned again.

It also has elements of ubuntu in it
This, at least, is a good idea. Though the unfortunate thing here, the biggest appeal of Ubuntu, is that it's free.

The only windows feature I care about is called "stop accessing my hard drive when you think my machine is idle", and the corollary "never do intense disk I/O without my explicit instruction."

I disable everything I can in Vista and Win7, superfetch, readyboost, readyboot, searchindexer, various logging services, but it's never enough. And once the registry is past a certain size the hard drive access problem goes critical and a reinstall of Windows is the only solution.

Microsoft perpetuates a myth that the constant hard drive access does not hurt performance. This is just a bold-faced lie that many of their customers believe, except the ones who have used UNIX machines with literally dozens of users accessing the disk simultaneously that have less stuttering than the single-user machines running modern Windows.

Is it true you can revert to a "classic" (read: usable) desktop format if desired? If not, then my chances of trying Windows 8 are nil. If so, they're slightly above nil.

I hope they keep Windows 7's compatibility alive for a while.

I've heard nothing but complaints from my own friends who have tried it. Apparently how good microsoft OS's are depends on the OS before it. If the OS before was bad, the new release will be good. If the OS before was good, the new OS will be crap. Windows 7 is pretty good, so we should have seen this one coming.

Windows 8CP is pretty fucking great IMO. It would, of course, be better on a x86-64 tablet (or ARM but I'd miss the real desktop underneath) but it works great on a real PC once you figure out Win+C and Win+X. I haven't gotten around to play much yet but it's supposed to be better than Win 7 at that as well. I suggest anyone with a spare partition to do a multiboot install with you current OS because it is pretty solid once you find your way around. I still think it's a "Vista 2" but then again Vista wasn't as bad as people make it out to be because they had underpowered computers at the time. 8 is much more optimized than Vista was though. The Windows Live (Hotmail, Bing, Xbox, etc.) integration is also pretty well done.

I'd prefer if Metro wasn't full screen but it's not that bad just different. I treat it like a big start menu that takes up the whole screen. All in all it's better than 7. And faster. And manages resources better. Try it while it's free. Just don't install it over you current OS, make a partition for it.

If you need tips for installing just ask. My install failed a few times (because of my hardware not being recognized by the installer) but it worked when I installed from "DRIVE\sources\setup.exe" on a mounted .iso. Then I could choose which drive to install it to instead of it installing over my Win 7 install.

Edit: And if Pinball FX 2 is a Xbox Live Arcade game like i suspect then yes it plays Xbox (Live Arcade) games.

a friend of mine did I think he liked it.
I looked at the UI and the first thing that popped into my head was "wow it,s Windows on a tablet!" I think I,ll stick to 7 unless they release a version with a old styled UI (a task bar and stuff like that)

It seems to me like a lot of people on the Escapist are terrified of change, and enjoy bashing anything that's new. It happened with the new website layout and it's here again with Windows 8 apparently.

So, I'm a power user of sorts. I do a lot of gaming on my rig, I occasionally do some code work(I'm learning some programming languages), I listen to music all the time, I have lots of tabs open in Google Chrome. The whole deal. So when I saw that Windows 8 was going to be optopmized for multiple control schemes I figured " Oh, here's Microsoft pulling an Apple, making a shitty desktop OS because they want to sell tablets." turns out I was very wrong.

Windows 8 is fantastic. So fantastic I'm using it right now, and I have no other OS installed. I thought the control scheme would be terrible, I thought it would be gimmicky, I thought the power user features would be gone, but I was just plain wrong. I can honestly say that Windows 8 is better than Windows 7, and Windows 7 was the best version of Windows in existence including XP.

Honestly I don't know why I'm even posting in this thread because I'm not going to change anyone's opinion if they're dead set on believing that everything after XP is shit because it's not XP. Essentially, if you want to ***** about Microsoft and their operating systems, just fuck off and go mod yourself a Linux based OS.

you guys do realize that Windows 8 is a work in progress and, therefore, is going to have up to %50 more suck than the finished project right?

The way Win 8 works is that the touchscreen type interface you have seen in previews is basically the start bar. So you have a normal desktop, and then to get your programs you use the new interface.

The music player is even worse. It's very similar to what happens when you browse your iPod touch library when it's sideways.

Oh sorry, how dare I have an opinion contrary to yours!

Everything after XP isn't shit. I really didn't mind Vista, and I couldn't see the fuss that everyone made about it. Windows 7 is an even better version, and I really like it. And I've actually used a Linux OS for quite a long time, when my old laptop was dying, it ran a lot smoother than Windows. I much prefer Windows 7 to Ubuntu though.

Windows 8, as a matter of personal preference, I don't like. I just don't like the interface. I know that you can just use the side bar to search for programs anyway, but I think the interface is ugly. It's not the worst thing ever, and if I bought a new computer with it on I wouldn't think about downgrading, but I prefer the Win 7 layout.

I installed the developer preview on my new Media PC because I thought the interface looked like it could go well on a TV with a remote.
Buuuut then I figured out the controls don't do well with a keyboard at all, and even mouse controls felt weird at times. I ended up uninstalling and just going for Ubuntu 11.10 at the moment.
EDIT: Oh, so the Consumer Preview came out 2 days ago, just about 1 days after I tried the Developer Preview and didn't fancy it. Well, I can't be bothered to check it out now, perhaps sometime later on.

I remember hearing that you could use the old 7 UI instead of the tablet interface if you wanted to. Is that true? (I'm too lazy to go out and download the OS myself to try it out atm).

Yes, you can still use the old interface, but it has some undergone some changes as well. It looks more "blocky" now, although it shouldn't be too hard if you've come from W7.
