I think they're doing it just to provide a steady stream of new versions every few years. Kinda like what Nokia does with Symbian OS, they can have up to three generations in product development at a time.

You could ask the same about Mac's Leopard vs Snow Leopard OS.

why would they? It works for C&C, generals still needs to be patched and we're 2 games and 2 expansions further...
besides, wouldn't you say they should've made vista better before launching windows 7?
So long as people are willing to pay, they'll just make crappy stuff so people will buy the next one in hopes that it will be better.

They've been working on the next versions of Windows whilst working on the version still due out soon, more than once.

God that's horribly written, but hopefully you get what I mean.

So? Phone companies can make several new models at the same time, same with car companies, and microsoft definetly is at least the size of them, if not bigger.

Yes^
, hate to join the train here but I kinda figured this was common practice to always have the new iteration of things in the pipeline. Helps in keeping up with the joneses (apple/google)

I'm working on switching to Ubuntu. It has its downsides, but the updates are much cheaper.

Well, it's not like anyone expected Windows 7 to be the last version of Windows ever, right? They're just thinking ahead. It's like how Square-Enix announced Final Fantasy XIV this year even though XIII is just now coming out in Japan and won't hit worldwide until next March.

Ubuntu seems pretty good, and with more users it will get more support. It will never topple windows though :(

Snow Leopard is basically a large upgrade to Leopard, not a new OS. They're both Mac OSX: the cat names are simply subtitles. In fact, upgrading from one to another is only like $20 or something. It's basically the next large step, not an entirely new operating system.

It doesn't need to. And maybe it shouldn't. As an OS or program gets more popular, the incentive to find exploits and write viruses increases.

Why would the planned future existence of Windows 8 surprise anyone? It would just be the next version of Windows. What, did you think Microsoft was just going to call it quits at designing operating systems with 7? Of course they are making a Windows 8 (or whatever they decide to call it), it's kind of what they do.

If they released it next year, THAT would be weird.

Actually, it's exactly every 6 months :p

And I basically agree with what everyone else said. No one was expecting MS to stop releasing OSes. It's inevitable and expected. Has it even been officially announced yet? If not, then I don't see where the problem is.

Now had they announced plans to release a new OS and pushed it on developers and consumers less than a year after a current release, that would be a WTF move, and a completely different story.

True, but thinking that the reason Windows has viruses and is exploitable is purely due to its popularity is a common misconception. Most of the time, the reason Windows installations are infested with malware is because everyone uses administrator accounts for regular usage.

... there I go off topic again.

They barely have Windows 7 going. I personally am still trying to get to grips with Windows 7 and finding it slightly awkward to Vista and EX which i am normally used to. How the hell can i get to grips with Windows 8? How much more can they do?

I agree that windows has severe security issues, but--shutting up now. Man, sometimes you just want to hijack the thread and start a flame war, you know?

I like to think every software developer has things queued up in the pipeline. It means you're going to see new products and new features a couple of years down the road, and it also means that the programmers have steady work. I think if they weren't working on Win8, they'd have to lay off the programmers who made 7, and just keep a skeleton crew around to deal with issues. Then they'd rehire once they thought the market was ready for a new OS.

If you think about it, car companies do the same thing. You see everyone come out with concept cars every year, and those always have features a few years from the assembly line. I wouldn't be surprised to learn Toyota was sketching out a 2013 or 2014 lineup already, so I'm not surprised Microsoft is putting in hours on a new OS already.

Really, there's no money in looking back. Those security updates and hotfixes keep people from leaving to Linux, but they don't sell discs. I think we'd all be rocked out of our office chairs if MS had said they were going to spend a couple years streamlining Vista or improving on 7. Actually, isn't this how that L4D2 boycott started?

Perhaps we could have a whole line of meme-based software: Photoshoop: The Whoop, Typing with Keyboard Cat, Symantechnoviking, and so on.
