OK, so I found a file on my hard drive that I was curious about because it wasn't set to open with any software by default. So I right clicked on it, Open With > Notepad. My screen flashes, HOLY SHIT! All of my desktop icons, all of my songs, pictures, videos: Every file that exists on my hard drive now opens in notepad!!!!!! I can't even start up the control panel because that opens with notepad too! I consider myself somewhat of an expert in computers but I crapped a load of bricks when this happened to me. Well it took 4 hours of work and 2 system restores to fix but I'm back in buisness. Anyone else have anything similar happen?

P.S. please don't make this into a Mac vs. PC thread. Please.

Hah! That exact thing happened to me. If the problem hasn't been fixed yet, boot up in repair mode and select the option to reset all configurations to a restore point. (assuming you're running vista or 7)

That's why curiosity is such a bad thing senor, and why the only thing keeping me away from the scary thread is the fact that I keep slapping my hand when my mouse wanders over it.

I found a registry fix for it. I just downloaded it and merged it with my current registry settings. Now I'm good.

HMM THIS IS WHY I USE A MAC HAHAHAHA yeah no, I can't do that with a straight face.

Meanwhile, back in serious land: The worst I've had happen to me is when I was insulting French history. How is that the worst that's happened to me? Because then the browser mysteriously started crashing my entire computer. Probably more of some sneaky bastard hacking past my firewall, but hey, it's a problem that involves computers and my operating system fucking up.

Ok, that works too...I just don't like fucking around with registry files. I have enough problems with those already.

Had you tried running programs from the command line?
Yes, but I know exactly how the problem happened so I'm going to use a workaround. It takes longer and I get the same result, but I don't screw up my computer with the workaround so that's what I'm going with.

Mac isn't immune to viruses, Linux is (which is why I am using it right now).

But before the switch, I had my fair share of problems and my brother had worse. On a drowsy knight I downloaded a file I otherwise would have been smart enough not to (this was a few years before the Linux switch, I was using XP at the time). System went down and Spyware Doctor should more than 1,000 infection. I took off what I could, but I gave up after some time and took it into the computer repair class in school. Got it back virus free.
My little brother (he lives with mom, I lives with dad) had 1 desktop that went through many fresh installs. All of them due to him using stuff like LimeWire to download songs and stuff. He would come across many bad files which AVG stopped, but he didn't learn. It went kaputz and it had to be fixed. Repeat this process 3 times. The PC eventually gave up and quit all together, but he was 1 thick-headed idiot (Still is).

I hear they have cookies and cute pictures of animals! :D

OT:I'm completely inept with computers so I don't usually go around poking random files, as a situation like that would probably happen.
