I just started installing Windows Vista into a virtual machine (using VMWare Fusion 2) in my macbook pro. I decided to time the whole thing to see how bad Windows Vista is. My guideline for referencing is that no OS should take longer than 1 hour to install, otherwise it is a waste of time.

Start time: 8:30 PM Central US time (Chicago)

Since I'm doing this all in VMWare, I get to comment on the installation process online as it happens, btw, and I can see responses right now. Why does the weird dialog box say the computer will reboot "several" times during the installation process? Can't they limit it to one, or at least give an actual number? The way it is now it's like they don't know how many times I'll reboot.

Vista can go jump off a cliff. Go and get Windows 7 RC, it will make you happy. Download link: http://www.microsoft.com/Windows/Windows-7/download.aspx

So far there's been one reboot, and it seems to have finished everything but the "completing installation" check mark.
I fully expect this last step to take an hour; it's the type of thing I would expect out of microsoft. But I'm ready to be surprised.

Keep in mind that you are splitting your RAM between both your Mac and the VMware, so it will install slower than normal.

EDIT: Only two reboots during the entire process. Microsoft was lying. Also the Vista boot sound can go to hell. I want my XP back!

See, I don't really know what the point was here. If you're looking for a Microsoft OS, try the RC of Windows 7, it's quite good.

This wasn't really a "Vista hate" thread by intent. I did go in with some preconceptions about Vista being generally bad, but it was more of a "passing time while vista installs" thread.

Ah well at least VMware has a nice interface for me to copy stuff from my mac os x into vista. Also, in response to several of you recomending Windows 7: I don't like betas since they are generally unstable and buggy. Especially for an OS, those are BAD things. Also, since all I have windows for is gaming, I don't think Microsoft would like me for using their beta. And I paid $200 for Vista and I'm not about to go throw it out in favor of a windows 7 beta unless it turns out that windows 7 will literally double my cpu speed, graphics card, and RAM

vista works i guess, but compared to xp it's crap. my xp crashed way less than my vista, vista does'nt like my games (most of them only a few years old) and all that vista has that xp did'nt are a few pretty but pointless graphic enhancements.
