If you're still running XP there's only one acceptable reason: Your computer is too damn old to run anything better. If it's fast enough you should be on seven by now.
You saying its free now? Last time I checked Home Premium was $179.99 at amazon.

I'm glad they're scrapping it. I'm sick of having to install it on some work PCs from people who still want it. Windows 7 is so much better.

Well, still better than the few poor saps who fell into the vally between XP and 7, called Vista....bad timing on their part.

Sorry to say but Win7 has XP beat in almost every category. I think XP die-hards are just luddites that need to let go and embrace an OS that is better optimized and capable of actually using more than 4gb of RAM... Also Vista is just a mess.

Well my problem with upgrading to 7 is that I have a mountian of older PC games that just are'nt 7 compatable and there is no compatablity patches for it, unless Windows start making these new systems 'backwards' comptable in away I'll cling to my XP system as much as possiable. Or till a DOSBox, ecquivilant for XP comes out.

Wouldn't most PC gamers get a whole new rig within the 4 years between the debut of Win7 and the end of support? If so, why wouldn't they get Win7?
There are several features XP has that 7 doesn't. For example, 7 seems to be completely missing the ability to record what you hear, a very important feature for anyone involved in sound editing, video editing and many other things.

You know, it's times like this I can feel smug for having Vista.

EDIT:

Ill probably upgrade to 7 whenever im bothered to replace my quite venerable and increasingly unstable laptop. Also, for the record, I use Vista.
Am I the only one who liked using Vista? I mean, it came with my laptop, did everything I wanted it too, (Nothing too flashy or what ever) and all I see is hate on it? :/
Same here, I have no problem using Vista, it just gets a bad rep (I can't see why)

Folks, it is time to upgrade. Windows XP is looking VERY long in the tooth at this point. Yes, Vista was a mistake, but 7 MORE than makes up for it's parent's indiscretions. The interface is cleaner, the performance is better, and it's added versatility and superior 64-bit support make it THE OS to have for PCs (unless you're a Linux dude.) Seriously people, please upgrade and join us.

If you have a 5-10 year old PC I can understand not wanting to upgrade to Windows 7. However if your system is even relatively new it is an absolute crime to not be running windows 7.

XP is just so slow, and clunky, and unstable by comparison.

Win7's compatibility mode actually works, there is a virtual OS if it doesn't and as long as you have 4+ gigs of RAM (Which is dirt fucking cheap today) the OS runs itself, programs and games like butter.

Not to mention the advantages of running a 64-bit OS or how beautiful DX11 is.

Why exactly did they need to put out a countdown timer TWO YEARS in advance anyways?

That sort of undercuts any sense of urgency a countdown implies.

The only thing I miss from XP so far is the ability to edit the right-click actions associated to file type. For instance, setting all .jpg's Edit command to open Photoshop. In Windows 7 you can only set the default program to open them in, but Edit remains MSpaint no matter what. You can always go to Open With, but that's an extra menu level or two which is annoying.

Everybody is looking at this like a failure at microsoft's part.

This is actually a ploy to upgrade sooner, since XP does not use gadgets.

I'm a long time XP supporter, but I would be lying to call it the best Windows ever. 7 is objectively better in just about every way. And I'm only using the phrase "just about" to absolve myself of nerdribution.

It's just too expensive.

Am I the only person in existence who had absolutely no issues with windows vista for 2 years and preferred it to XP?

I've been running 7 for about 8 months now too, that's going great and I think it's even an improvement on vista. Once you have third party theming installed, add a little Rainmeter or Samurize to taste and you've got a really good operating system.

XP on the other hand was a clunky, unhelpful and annoying operating system that I was so happy to see the back of that I did a double take when I first heard that it was considered the overall best operating system..

Ignoring the fact that april 2014 it an eon away in computer terms (I will probably have to plan my next big hardware upgrade before then). I've used 7 and it offers nothing (gaming wise)to justify any upgrade. My aim is to hold out until google or steam release a gamers only os.. Duel boot to that and use that for my games and ubuntu for everything else...

Speaking as someone who has three computers (Win7 Desktop, WinXP Laptop, and OSX Netbook) I love XP for monkeying about with old stuff. I mostly use that machine for web browsing and playing OLD games (we're talkin' Commander Keen old) and it works great. Worst case scenario, I'll support it MYSELF darnnit!

to be honest, the countdown timer it self is useless, so who cares if it doesn't work for XP.
I have Vista (yeah shut up) at the moment. I don't like XP ever since vista became default on new laptops, it just seems too old. Don't get why everybody hates vista, is vista crap with games or something? (not pc gamer)
when i got my family their new computer which had vista on it (good 6-12 months after it was out), i had the gall to install a program on it which happened to put it into an infinite loop of bluescreens as the program was set to boot on startup and due to it being a total hog on the ram (particularly for the average family budget pc) i had no choice but to reformat the computer.
i know they have fixed the bluescreens now and i believe they fixed most of the RAM issue in SP1 but they will recieve no love from me.

i have also found Win7 much better to use, from the drag to the edge feature to the bat out of hell speed (seriously, i was running games on my old, old machine much better with Win7 than xp).

Hahahahahaha! It is as if Windows Vista didn't exist in between XP and 7! :D
Here's a couple reasons why:
1: Now that windows 7 is out, Microsoft and PC users in general are in a BIIG hurry to forget that failure of an OS even existed.
2: Vista and 7 share the same core, which is to say that 7 is what Vista was supposed to be. You could call Vista a beta of 7.

I don't understand the emotional attachment to the WinXP OS. Would you guys use a 10 year old cell phone? Are you still playing Xbox and PS2? No, you bought the new and better stuff.

I have been using Win7 since it came out and have not found a single old game that doesn't work it. So that excuse isn't valid. Sure some have some issues but nothing that a quick Google or two won't fix. I get a crash every once and a while but no more than I did with WinXP.

I get it by the way. I loved my old Compaq with Windows ME on it. Anyone remember that garbage? I still have so many fond memories of tweaking and patching and testing that machine. I can almost honestly say that I probably had the most stable version of Windows ME on the planet, and it STILL crashed about once a day. I still loved that machine and that OS because it was fun but would I go back and use that machine today? Hell no, I love my current machines with Win7.

I found XP, (my OS after ME) to be quite unexciting. It was pretty much Win98 with a pretty skin on top. Same networking problems, same driver installation problems, same problems! I would venture to argue that Win7 is the only brand new OS that Microsoft has come out with since Win98.

Don't fear change! If you have a PC with XP on it and you install Win7, I can even promise you that the system will even run faster. It did with my girlfriends 5 year old machine.
