A few months ago, my mother's laptop that we bought off of ebay had a hard drive failure. We bought a new hard drive, but lacked any way of re-installing Windows XP. I decided to download a copy of XP and install it to the laptop.

I just want to know whether or not it would be safe to use the Windows Updater, since I have an illegitimate copy of XP.

Thank You, and Merry Christmas.

If you don't have a serial key, it's likely to break the installation. I'd advise you to get one...piracy isn't exactly condoned here, and besides, the updates are there for a reason.

If you're into experimentation then try ubuntu or some other linux distro (but ubuntu is the easiest). You can boot it up in live mode to try it out, and it's a much more modern OS than XP.

If you really can't get yourself a legitimate copy I would suggest the same as Esotera and say that Ubuntu would be your best best. Linux can actually be surprisingly user friendly.

XP has already fully completed installation, I just turned off automatic updates. I also already own XP, I just lost the disc a few years ago.

Short of getting a new serial key, there isn't really that much that can be done if you want to update XP. At least, you won't be able to get any help with cracking on this site, even if you have lost the disc.
