So, what do all you crazy kids out there, think of Microsoft pulling their support for XP after February?

Is it just their attempt to focus more power into fixing Vista?

or...

Is it the greatest way to make people use Vista so you can charge them out the ass for it?

or...

Is it the fastest way to make everybody switch to Mac?

*note* I have my XP set aside for my new comp I'm building, so I wont be switching to shit...just saying...

XP will probably still be better then Vista for quite a while, we can just wait for servicepack 1.

Meh, XP was dire to begin with I was a 2000 loyalist for a long time, and a 98 loyalist before that, that how things work.

Service pack 3 is on the way IIRC, can't do must else to XP to make it better.

I switched to Vista on my new rig, mainly for Dx10. Haven't had one problem so far, even with it being x64, Crysis plays at a comfortable framerate on high, the actual OS is immense, all the features are useful rather than novelty.

Windows 7 will be out in '09, gives MS about 2-3 years to make Vista awesome.

^For folks with highish-end rigs running XP, you can enable content reserved for dx10 users by editing your config file. Erego, upgrading to Vista for the DX10 eyecandy is still a non-issue, at least for Crysis.

Yes, under XP

Yes, running a DX9 card (albeit you're going to want at least an x1950xt/x, or a pair of them, to get playable frame rates.

The interesting question is: how much cash did MS stuff down Crytek's Cryshorts to Crypple the game unless you ponied up for Vista? And, did MS bribe other production studios (i.e. Turbine->LOTRO) to "lock out" higher-end bump-mapping, shadow rendering, texturing, etc. with a config tweak, to promote the adoption of Vista?

And apologies in advance to some overworked mod, I accidently hit "report" while I was dragging my mouse across the screen.

I don't know if I'll bother to upgrade. XP's good, OS X is better, and after fighting with Vista a few times on friends' computers, it seems like No. 3 in this race. Maybe we'll get lucky and more companies will start programming in OpenGL again.

Vista's going to lose out in this race for quite some time, and that's assuming it even manages to catch up. Even with Service Pack 1 for it and Microsoft getting rid of their support for XP, you can't honestly tell me that there aren't going to be burned DVDs flying all over the place that contain fully-patched versions of XP, after the final update is released.

Microsoft HAD to focus on Vista in order to sort it out properly (And therefore get more money from it), and cutting XP support off is just one more way of saying "Buy our newest stuff." They're a business, it's what they do.

My friend remembers the days when XP was first released, and he tells me that it was utterly diabolical. Perhaps Vista will go the same route, winning the hearts and minds of the people. I, for one, might not even bother upgrading.

Goodness gracious, who would have though that MS would actually try to exploit people by forcing XP owners to buy Vista? What a larcenous thing to say ;)

I'm a GNU/Linux man. This whole debacle has flown straight over my head. I use an nLite version of XP to run games on a dual-booted computer, but every other function is handled better and faster by GNU and it's _free_. You also don't deal with crap like "this won't be supported anymore" or "this is a restricted format."

If y'all are wondering what nLite is: http://www.nliteos.com/

I was using Windows 98 six months ago... I plan on using my shiny new XP Pro for another 7 years or so. Thank God I'm not a hardcore PC gamer. ;-)

I'm one of the people in the "Vista hasn't caused me any problems" camp. And has yet to cause me a problem that isn't related to trying to install games from 1995 *shakes fist at StarCraft disc that won't install*

I was so looking forward to Vista for my mini-tablet... apparently the pen support and voice support is amazing in the new OS. It's a pity that I can't physically stuff enough RAM into the little thing to make Vista run smoothly, and that its Celeron processor would chug like a steam locomotive on a mountainside.

Oh well. There's always the next generation.

I believe that Vista will get better, just as XP did. If it doesn't, Microsoft will a lot of shit from people buying their stuff. In time everyone will come to adore Vista as we do XP.

I was anti-vista till I tried it, can't see what all the fuss is about, all my games run on full@1680x1050, with great fps. (Excluding Crysis)

I had issues with XP trying to get games from what I like to call "The Era of awesome." it's nothing new to Vista.

I've played everything to death from the afore mentioned era, so it doesn't bother me all too much :)

Add me to the "Happy with Vista" camp. PLUS good framerates with Crysis. And of course, the simple fact that Vista is considerably more stable than XP, to the point where major components run in isolation of one another at the kernel level, and therefore can be individually shutdown and restarted without taking the entire machine with it.

That said, I will say that Thief 2 refuses to install :( But it was finickey even in XP.
