Nah that was pretty much what I was looking for, just in case you were one of those people that put a top range GPU into a rig running a Pentium4 or something lol. Your rig is pretty similar to mine, apart from the GPU. Is bizarre that top end nvidia cards are having issues when their logo is splashed all over the intro sequence.

I guess you just have to play the waiting game (unless you haven't tried the above mentioned 3d fix).

Also, uninstall the Nvidia stereoscopic drivers, I hear there is a conflict with that spec of the nvidia drivers and the game. I play the game on High with a Geforce 260GTX with very little issue.

Ah, a prime example of any software based PC problem. Theres always at least one post with that.

Not trying to be a dick, but what does Optimization mean to you? To me it means that its Optimal on most set-ups out there and can work with most software as well.

Optimization means that it doesn't waste processing power on useless tasks.

Compatibility issues are not a lack of optimization nor are the games issue. You need a new driver from nVidia, not a new patch from CDProjekt.

Anything from poor programming to poor implementation such as rendering high resolution textures outside of the area the player is (which is actually something TW2 is amazing at not doing, with almost no loading screens between moving from one area to another) cause the game to waste resources and slow down. That is what optimization, in terms of software, is: increasing performance by removing resource wasteful aspects.

Personally, I'm somewhere about half way in-between the recommended system and the minimum one, but I can barely get a good framerate out of, no matter how bad it looks. I did find that lowering the resolution really helps, but it also makes it look ridiculously fuzzy. The game is an absolute mess on a technical level, both in gameplay and in graphics. While it looks amazing, it runs terribly. While the gameplay is fun, the difficulty curve is a mess. Here's to hoping that a patch will fix most of these issues as the game is artistically fantastic.

You do realize that there is an easy setting that is, gasp, easy.

Complaining about the difficulty curb is stupid when you refuse to lessen the difficulty if you are unable to cope.

I haven't, but I have a 3D set-up and since the game is supposedly 3D-ready, i'd like to enjoy it that way, I wish they'd hurry up on a patch.

I was running at 15fps on medium settings with a GeForce 8800 GT. I downloaded a new driver, fixed some settings and now I'm running at 45fps on medium settings.

The game runs fine if you get the right drivers and set the right settings.

The Difficulty Curve has nothing to do with how hard the game is. It has to do with the rate it gets hard and at what points in the game the difficulty either increases or decreases. The difficulty started out pretty good, but quickly got far too easy because late game skills weren't balanced for the late game encounters. Plus, a lot of difficult encounters late in the game were difficult due to cheap tactics and annoying enemies, not because of a true increase in difficulty. I'm finding that Hard seems to be better in this respect because better skills don't completely negate entire groups of enemies.

It keeps asking for the Activation code, no matter how many times I give it. I've heard this has been a problem for a few people, but there aren't any answers yet.

I believe the servers are down at the moment, so that's going to screw with attempts to authenticate with them. Patch should be arriving either today or tomorrow though, so says the official spokesman of CDProjekt anyways.

There is a "patch" right now that might fix some activation woes (basically a manual download for the update the authentication program is supposed to automatically download), but if the servers are actually down like I think they are that still won't help. Couldn't hurt to peruse the Community tab on their website [http://www.en.thewitcher.com/community/] though.

Where might I find this available manual install?
The website states the servers are back up but I can't be sure about that. Seeing all manner of problems reported about installing this game, makes me think it should have been in Beta for a while longer.

B: The way they set up the beginning doesn't make much room for learning the basics. Its a shitty tutorial is what I am saying. Throwing groups of 5 at you in a combat system you only know through random tips, in the mean time you are being hurried along by a time or a freaking dragon. Its very engaging, but its harsh as heck. in the meantime when the most commonly asked question on the on the forums are "How do I use potions" then you know that arn't doing a good enough job training your players for the gameplay.

I like to think of myself as a fairly easy going fellow, but damn do gripes like that one ever make me want to say "RTFM" to people, heh. But seriously, all those things are covered in the manual, people should read it before assailing internet strangers for answers to questions they shouldn't even need to ask because they have a bloody manual. I agree with you of course - the tutorial isn't that great at teaching newbies how to play the game because it's essentially just "having you play the game, but with some tooltips" - but I don't personally see that as a bad thing. The segue into "combat tutorials" in most modern day games comes with an almost audible clunk as the game changes gears into "hand-holding mode", people who either already know how to play or could figure it out on their own end up suffering through the bloody things.

Having actually read my manual, I didn't have any problems with not knowing how to do things during the tutorial, and I consequently had a blast - my issue is that I was playing through The Witcher again to have a save game to import immediately prior to starting the sequel, and ended up powering through the last few chapters in a couple of marathon sessions the day before I "officially" sat down with #2; this has left me with muscle memory that occasionally screws with my attempts to do certain things because I instinctively push the wrong button when I make snap reactions to "oh crap, monsters!" situations.

I also have had some weirdness happening in this game.

In the opening sections at Foltest's camp and also in Flotsam I am getting between 22 and 30 fps. My quad core is not being thrashed and my GPU (GTX 460) is only working at 50-60%, this is with the High settings that were recommended and at 1080p. It doesn't seem to matter what resolution or settings I select apart from the UberSampling, of course, which creates a bit of a slideshow. Every setting I change makes little or no difference I still get the same 22-30 fps. Outside of towns the rate goes up a bit to between 30 and 40. Also, there have been quite a few CTDs without error messages, this is because the game seems to want ALL of your memory (I have 4GB, by the way) and I had to change a windows setting to get it to stop crashing - which is not good really. All this with the new NVidia beta drivers and no other apps running apart from MSI Afterburner. Strange behaviour indeed.

This is an incredible game and I really want to get into it but I am going to have to wait a while for a patch or spend even more time searching the net for a solution. Also, as the OP says, there are many, many people with similar problems.

If you have an nvidia card and want to play this game smoothly, Uninstall the nvidia 3d drivers. Ya it makes a huge differnce.

That's the usual problem you run into when you build a first game engine from scratch. There's bound to be performance issues, it's unavoidable with the wide spectrum of hardware available. Personally i'm running that game on GTX460 1GB and quite dated for nowadays standards Core 2 Quad and had no major issues on high setting (with ubersampling off) except one single part of the game.
That said im running the GoG version as opposed to retail one, which apparently suffers from SecuROM forced by publishers for some odd reason. From what CDP guys said, the publishers decided to force the SecuROM at very late stage of production and they didn't have enough time to properly test it.
The workaround is to obtain the GoG version .exe file which apparently is OK according to some CDP reps if you actually do own the game.
