The Witcher 2 is completely stand alone. There's an occasional reference to something that happened in a previous game, like a character saying "Remember when we X" or the like, but that's about it. It sucks that I didn't get to play the original but I'm guessing that they have some kind of a solution to this (either a "Previously on..." kind of thing or maybe it just didn't matter and The Witcher 2 can just stand on it's own story-wise).
There's all of 2 primary characters that carry over: Geralt, the main character, and Triss, his squeeze. And at the end of Witcher 1, Geralt saved the life of the king he's serving at the opening of Witcher 2.
Now you're all caught up and ready to go.
