I have a quick question for those that have played Witcher 1 and 2: Do you need to play 1 before 2 to get all the story elements or are they separate and don't affect each other too much? All this talking about how good The Witcher 2 is makes me want to download it from Steam.

Obviously you'll get a better experience if you play the first, you can even import your character from the first game into the second for some better starting gear and a few story changes here and there. But do you need to? Not really, the story are mostly non-related and independent of one another.

If anything Witcher 2 draws more heavily on the books than anything since it delves more heavily into Geralts past than the first game did.

The Witcher 2 is a direct sequel to the first game, so the characters will talk about things that you haven't done if you haven't played TW1, but it still stands on its own as a separate game and story. You should be fine. There's also a decent wiki if you get confused and want some quickie background info.
