Witcher 2 worth $7 if I couldn't get through the first?

Eh, am I really the only one here who absolutely loved The Witcher 1?
(I am aware the answer is always no)

Yeah, I am surprised by the amount of hate that the first Witcher 1 is receiving in this thread. I mean, this is a forum that constantly sings praises for freaking Arcanum.

so the steam sale has witcher 2 listed at $7. But torchlight 2 is only $10. Max Payne 3 is $15 on amazon!! I paid $5 for the first game and never got far because I was already spoiled by games like Dragon Age Origins. How does this game stack up story and combat-wise to the first? I am only getting one of these 3 games.

i thought witcher 1 was terrible (and i REALLY tried to like it) and never made it past the second act where the developers inexplicably turned their monster hunter into a detective in one of the slowest and dullest acts in any game i have ever played.

witcher 2 is fantastic. Acts 1 and 2 especially -- Act 3 feels really rushed, but all-in-all the attention to detail is amazing. play it. especially for $7.

Well, part of being a monster hunter *is* being a detective - plenty of vampires, werewolves or strigas around that don't look like a monster at all times, requiring the hunter to rely on his wits rather than just his silver blade.
So no, I didn't think Act 2 was half-bad - sure, the constant fights in the swamp got old fast, but the city of Vizima more than makes up for it in atmosphere. Plus, I loved the Lovecraft-inspired brickmaker village.

I liked that you could *fail* the investigation, and it'd affect events up to the end of Act 3

However, the execution could have used work, because failing would mean that one of the bosses in Act 3 turns positively Nintendo-hard

But really, seriously check the specs. My machine is capable of running every game I install on "really nice", but with The Witcher 2, I had to tweak the settings a lot, and it still feels way too sluggish for me to enjoy it.
