TLDR: Help a poor student make dorm wine on the cheap

Hello escapist, another advice thread by yours truly. The topic of the day: Homebrew Wine.

Not wanting to spend money getting drunk on hard liquor, I decided to invest in Wine making for my dorm living. I figure it be cheap, and well, that is mainly it.

My concept:

100% grape juice(or other juice?)

yeast(baking yeast)

Large bag of sugar

I plan to follow the video below with the ingredients above to make my product. But after doing more google-fu i saw there were alot more components that were suggested for me to use, like a acid(Tannin was the most recommend) and wine making yeast.

First of all, be careful with your storage and sanitation. I once knew somebody who tried something like this but with homebrew beer, and something went wrong and it gave them some naaaaaaasty shit that took a solid day to get out of their system.

Secondly, clear it with your roommate. I'm guessing alcohol isn't allowed in your dorms as is the way with most dorms, and while what you do for yourself is your own business, if you get caught they're going to get in trouble too because it's their room as much as it is yours. This isn't just about getting written up, this is about being caught and charged as a minor in possession.

Thirdly, it looks like all those raw components are going to cost about as much as your bottom shelf wine, which is exactly the quality you're going to get. I've known many people who have made their own alcoholic beverages, but they've never listed cheapness as their main reason for doing it. And you're going to get it in smaller quantities over a longer period of time. It won't be easy to hide for inspections, you won't enjoy the fruits of your labor often, and you may or may not end up with a bottle of fermented shit. Honestly, if cost effectiveness is all you're after, I'd try something else.

If you want to do it for the experience then by all means go for it, but it isn't the method I would use.
