A man jumped up from a park bench, pressed a knife to her throat and hissed, 'I'm going to cut you.'" SM's lack of fear is actually what got her into this predicament in the first place, though; she approached this individual when he called her over, even though she was alone, it was nighttime, and she said he appeared "drugged out."
That's not the absense of fear, but the lack of common sense.

It's not like fear ever results in an appropriate action anyway.
People going back the long way they came in when fleeing a burning building instead of taking the green lit fire escape right next to them and victims freezing when they're about to get hit by a car, is what fear does.

I'm sure it's also to do with her being incredibly stupid. If someone who looked drugged up called me over I wouldn't not go because I'm scared, I wouldn't go because it's a fucking stupid idea.
Why, though? This person isn't afraid of being hurt, raped, kidnapped or even killed. So why is she stupid for going over to a strange man. You'd think you'd be able to use logic instead of fear to keep yourself alive but when you don't fear the consequences (up to and including death or serious injury) it's impossible to do so.

It'd be like if they went to a touch a venomous snake and you stopped them halfway though saying "stop, you'll get bitten", this person would probably just answer "so...".

Now all she needs is damage to the part that feels pain and she's a qualified superhero.

That's how these things work, right?

It turns out it isn't logic or wits that keeps us from making stupid decisions, it's being cowards.

It's not "That's probably a bad idea," it's "Aaaah!"

Makes sense. If your house was burning, would you really go "Hmm, the fire or the smoke may reach me and either could mess me up and being messed up is a bad thing, so I should go out" as opposed to "shit, fire!"?

To be honest, I don't know exactly why the woman approached the man, but I do know that most people severely underestimates how big of a role emotion plays into our decision making. I'm not talking about only when we make hasty and/or irrational decisions, even when we make a good decision, we relied a lot on emotion.

Sometimes I'd love to just be able to say 'fuck it' and go sky diving. I'd like to be that kind of fearless, its quite safe I know. But its the 'if' that really gets me, wht 'if the parachute doesnt open' being the chief one :/

The way I am now I know I'd probably end up jumping through the floor of the plane before it became airborn. I can be a bit of a wimp when I want to.

So she could go through Amnesia The Dark Descent without shitting herself? Wow nice!
No, noone could do that, that is impossible.

But that would seem pretty cool, but it'd create a problem say in a hostage situation and she'd probably be killed.

I wonder if that takes away her ability to care about things. I mean, sure, lets say she loved her mother. She enjoyed every minute with her, but if someone were to say that her mother was going to die of cancer, would it bother her or would she not care, because she wouldn't fear her mother's death? All in all, poor lady. I wish something could be done for her, and give her at least a little fear.

Why is it that fearless always seems to go hand in hand with stupidity? Why can't we not fear, but still avoid dangerous situations by realizing the danger through logic instead of emotion, like in Dune?
Ah, but emotion is logic, it is our most basic subconscious programing honed over millions of years to make us an extremely effective self preserving organism.
So don't try to cast emotion aside, use your logic to understand it and through understanding control it you can.

Wasn't it Hal Jordan being mention as a man without fear or was that Batman?
It's Dare Devil, actually. *adjusts nerd badge*
Daredevil. One word. :p *adjusts bigger nerd badge*
Then why are there two capital D's on his costume? *adjusts grammar nazi badge*

Actually, I did spell it as one, but then I remembered the two D's, so I figured it was two words...

I have a friend who got himself out of a possibly very serious beating by laughing maniacally at his attackers. He must've been afraid, I mean, there were a bunch of goons ready to pound some "normal" into his "satanist" ass (he's a metal fan, shit like this still happens in my country apparently), and somehow he controlled his fear and started laughing as loudly and psychotically as he could. They ran away. I think a fearless person could've been even more chilling.

Now that they have officially recorded the location in your brain where fear takes place they need to come up with a some sort of temporary sedative that can be ingested to numb that area of the brain to temporarily allow the subject to experience less fear or perhaps a surgery that can temporarily disable the major functions of that area of the brain.
