Well now I'm just intrigued. I'd like to study this, but watching groups of women seems like a really good way to get a restraining order and a court summons.

I do the nod, myself, if within close enough range to perceive head movements. If the distance is too far for said movements to be seen, I just wave like a loony.

It depends on the person. If it is a guy I consider like a brother, I give them "the nod". Everyone else, I wave (or if its a woman I know well, they get a hug). I am a tomboyish woman.

I'm a girl and if it's a close friend I'll hug them but if it's someone I don't know so well I'll usually just say hi and give a small nod. And it does seem to be mostly a guy thing as most girls will wave at someone rather than nod.

I do an upward nod with an "alright" unless they're really close to me (like Ollie, we've been best friends for ~10 years now) in which case they get a downwards nod
I'm a guy btw.

The girls I know tend to do a smile rather than a nod so if I see a girl I know passing by I'll do a smile instead of a nod.

I imagine they know of it, though I'm not sure that I've noticed them do it. I've certainly got some stunning smiles from female friends in response to my slight head tilt, so...yeah, they know what it is regardless of whether they do it or not.

I don't think I really do either nod that much, at least not with people I don't know already. Now that it's brought up though, I find it rather odd that it's part of human behaviour... just one of those things, I suppose.

Then again, it might just be a societal thing and some people might have no idea what the hell we're all talking about, so maybe it isn't universal.
