Pretty girl, but she doesn't really look like an Amazon warrior. Maybe she'll bulk up a bit.

I'm also curious as to what the grand plan is for these movies. Seems odd that they'd introduce 2 main JL members into the continuity without origin/background stories. It feels like DC/WB is trying to mimic Marvel, but are cutting corners to catch up and cash in.

Really people? You are going to judge her just based on looks? I'm not arguing that she'll be perfect for the role, mind you. But saying she won't work in the role just because she's not "buff"? That's a bit unfair, especially considering Christian Bale.

The picture on the left is Christian Bale in 2004's The Machinist. The picture on the right is Christian Bale in Batman Begins a year later. The gap in filming for those two movies? About six months. In that time gap, he put on about 60 pounds through diet and exercise in order to "buff up" for the role. I think it is safe to say that Gal could do something quite similar, especially since she is not starting from as thin as Christian Bale, and is not trying to get as big as Christian Bale.
Oh, it's worse than you think.

Bale lost about 60 or so pounds (around 28 kilos for you filthy metric types) to play the his role in the Machinist. He didn't start out that skinny; he starved himself to a dangerous level for that performance, and he did so very quickly.

And he didn't just build back up to his old weight to play Batman, he actually put on another 40 lb of muscle for the role. Yes, that means he gained one hundred pounds of muscle for Batman Begins. (Again, around 46 kilos for those of you cursed with a rational measurement system).

I think the lesson here, really, is that Christian Bale is dangerously insane and at some point will probably be found eating people in preparation for a role as a cannibal.

As for as Gal Gadot goes... I reckon it wouldn't be exceedingly hard for her to bulk up for Wonder Woman, she's got a reasonably exotic appearance and accent that will probably help, and she does have the advantage of actual military training which has to count for something. I'm not jumping up and down for joy at the casting, but I wasn't overly pleased with Henry Cavill either and that turned out okay. I'll give her a chance before I start calling it a terrible decision.

Bale is a method actor who's insane to boot. This woman is a pretty face who got famous off her pretty face and isn't going to jeopardize her body for a bit part. This is a ludicrous comparison.
I'm just saying that writing her off for not being in shape is a bit unfair. Let me also point out something mentioned in the article.

"It interrupted her army time, but after a three year absence she went back in and served as a fitness instructor."

If anyone should be able to get into good shape and buff up safely without jeopardizing their body, it's a fitness instructor. Plus, saying she's just a pretty face is a bit unfair, considering that she was in the Israeli army.
On that last remark: I'm Israeli and I can assure you that serving in the Israeli military doesn't mean having any combat experience - especially when celebrities are involved (she was a celebrity here before her military service).

All I know is that she's famous here for being a successful model, and I haven't had a chance to see her acting in anything (at least as far as I can recall). I like seeing someone from my country getting a major role in a movie like this, but she wouldn't be my first choice for this role either. I hope that she'll surprise us all.

I know that. I attempted to enlist in the US Army, and would have been in a non-combat role. My reference to her being in the Israeli army was assuming that the army had fitness requirements, which Gal would then have to meet in order to be part of the army. Is that accurate?

I really hope it's an actual bit of plot that Wonder Woman is involved in and not just an end-film teaser showing Diana infiltrating "Man's Land" for some kind of surprise attack or something. It's also too bad that Superman can't get a sequel without Batman and now Wonder Woman to give him support!

Should have been either Gina Carano or Jaime Alexander. Wonder Woman doesn't have to be played by an actress of stunning range and depth, she has to be a 6 foot amazon with a broad jaw who can toss Superman around if need be.

So...they're going to need to do origin stories for TWO new heroes in the next movie, while maintaining an interesting story for Superman too? Based on DC's track record, I'm more than a bit concerned about this.

Unless they go, "You know what? Everyone should know Batman's story already, and Wonder Woman's isn't that hard. Let's skip that and get right to the meat." But we all know that won't happen.

She was in the Israeli military, that won't be difficult. If you can get through basic training then you're pretty good as far as physical abilities go

Wait, this movie has Wonder Woman as well? How many are they going to try to cram into this one?

Something tells me this will be an unpopular opinion, but here goes:

Fast & Furious Movies never really required god-like acting ability to be an enjoyable movie, and considering I've watched a few of them, the acting in those movies are "meh", but they do what's needed, and her roles in the series, I didn't really care for her (Call me a monster/sexist if you wish, but I just didn't care. Those movies are hot cars, hot girls, hot action, and I can dig that). Date Night.... Moving on. Knight & Day I can give some leaveway for on her acting skills, but other than that, she hasn't had much time in movie spotlight, and now they're giving her Wonder Woman... And my faith in humanity for the hope that people leave comic lore, continuity, and common sense in tact has been destroyed once more (And no, I do not mean for the fact that she is Israeli, I actually find that nice that they would go there, but here's my reasons I'm facepalming this decision)

1. As I've said above, those movies aren't the best show of acting ability, considering the high-octane that F&F movies do (And considering that the series is now enjoyable by even the most hated of haters after Fast 6) and despite her other appearances in cinema & television (Some I didn't know, some I didn't care) I still say there were other people that could've became Wonder Woman in a more acceptable fashion (And better, well known and respected, acting ability)

2. Her Body Type. Yes, she's a model, I understand that, but that would mean that the people signing her on should've known that Amazonians aren't known for dolling up and looking pretty like mall girls, but that would assume they know DC Lore and Respect That Lore. She's too skinny in the pictures I saw, and yeah, she could give out some more muscle tone over the course of the movie, but here's the thing though: Wonder Woman has an adequate breast size & isn't the skinniest of the DC Heroines. Hell, her weight class is moderate (Depending on which DC Era/Series you use) and I KNOW Gal won't gain weight for this movie, because that could impact her career as a model, and most models would rather have their modeling career in tact than gain a few pounds for one movie, or a series of movies. And let's add the fact that her breasts aren't the right size for this character. That would be nitpicking, but yeah, if you're gonna be Wonder Woman, you need the right breast size or at least wear something that won't fly out or be out of place in the middle of a fight scene or normal scene (Which I know doesn't exist right now, since there are quite a few perverted people that can spot fake breasts a mile away.)

3. What Magical Quality does she have to make her perfect for this movie? I'll need people to help me find her acting prowess, I don't believe her body is good enough to give proper justice to Wonder Woman, and quite frankly, her face is her best quality at this point. I just don't see it.

As for who WOULD do good as Wonder Woman, I honestly don't know. Gina Carano apparently can't act (Like that hasn't stopped anyone from doing iconic roles *wink wink*.) The woman who played Mother Russia in Kick-Ass 2... Not sure, don't know how good she can act and how she could transform into that role. Beth Phoenix from WWE? XD Moving on... I just don't know who would do good as Wonder Woman, but I know there has to be someone else who can do WAY better than Gal. Maybe some new talent? But then again, new talent doesn't fill movie theater seats. Maybe send Gina Carano on a journey to hone her acting ability to the point to where she could give Academy Award Winners a run for their money?

But yeah. There's always a hard choice for making roles for certain characters, but making Gal Gadot Wonder Woman is a poor choice to me, and that is why.

I'll be glad to respond to anyone who thinks I'm wrong and have a reason for it. I do love a good debate.

I don't think many on this thread are going to disagree with you by the looks of the comments so far, including myself. You make good points and I agree with all of them.

I'm more disappointed that Wonder Women isn't getting her own movie more than anything else. It would have been nice to have a super hero movie starring a heroine for a change and lord knows we don't have many of those.

I'm still not super-enthused about this project, as I really wanted to see more Superman and no Batman. With the announcement of Wonder Woman, and the possible inclusion of Doomsday, this is straying into Spider-Man 3 territory with undue haste.

OT: I have less problem with the casting here, simply because superhuman strength is easily given a hand wave. All she really has to do is tone up a lot and put on a small amount of bulk. Everything else is special effects.

Depending on exactly how she's going to appear, the acting ability or lack thereof may not be a problem. I'm doubting she's going to have a really huge role in the film anyway (more's the pity), so the odds of it coming down to physical presence and ability to project are higher. From my limited exposure to the Fast & Furious films, she'll do alright for that portion.

Hopefully this leads to WW getting her own movie via being well written, well represented, and well recieved. Honestly, it's well beyond time for a good movie about a comic book woman.

A slow start is better than none, I guess.

offtopic: wow escapist forums, Ben get's to play Batman and hell breaks in, but since it's a female character we're talking.... well only 30 post.

You know I actually forgot this..... sigh I gues it is also important, really the more i think about it the less I like her for the role, weird with Ben Affleck it was the other way around.

Now now I didn't knew of Gina Carano but after google the name I think she got the looks , don't know about her acting.

Jaime Alexander does look a lot like Wonder Woman but, it's the same as Gal, she doesn't have to body build for Wonder Woman, I would feel the same way if she was casted.

For Wonder Woman I have always thought in:

I think she can build up a lot like in that movie and, well she might not be the greatest actress but she can pull something right? anyway just my personal choice which doesn't matter since we have now this anorexic Wonder Woman.

No fitness requirements but you can't be too underweight or morbidly obese. In Israel, military service in mandatory for all of those who are deemed able to serve (with few exceptions), so the military can't be too picky. One does have to be in very good shape if one wants to get to an elite/special combat unit.

Well she looks the part.
Look the part ? She slender and got no musculature. Wonder Woman is a curvacious and athletic/chiseled (depending on representation). If you allow me to use Angry Joe word, she need to gain 40 pounds at the gym.

But do think she could look the part if she actually did gain some mass.

I swear I'm beginning to think that the CEO of DC comics hates DC comics. At the very least, they want an Avenger's movie without understanding what went into making Avengers work. Just trying to force feed several characters into a movie won't cut it.

Wonder Woman should get her own movie which establishes her as a stand alone character capable of handling her own threats. Not a cameo (which I've heard rumors is all this will be) in another character's movie. Establishing that it's all part of a bigger universe and hinting at the other characters with nods to the Daily Planet and Wayne Enterprises is one thing. But I'm not impressed by what I'm hearing here.

For crying out loud, she's probably the most famous female super hero and has even had a successful TV show. A bit part in a bigger film seems like a slap in the face. Even a larger role in a bigger film isn't much better.
