Ah my dad is a metal worker.
Just throw big balls of super-wrapped cello-tape.
Apparently, if thrown hard enough, they are meant to hurt like hell.

Make a ball of metal shavings, tape it and throw. Makes a mess on his side and hurts. Plus, if made correctly, it can;t be thrown back immediately.

Don't think you have the equipment in the work shop for this but in construction, we usually bolt their tool carry all to the floor or what ever work surface they are on. Or tie wire or cable tie a tool they use a lot to a surface near where they left it, then hide or cable tie/wire all knives,pliers,shears etc. And hide your own.
