The same was said about radio then tv then video games and now they are just narrowing down the selection a bit, Reality check time kids most people would rather avoid life for a while pretend to be something more it is what EVERYONE does some find certain things for this and since WoW has been trying to fill this niche for so long it comes to reason that many people have found it a good source of escape but just like everything else people need to realize limits similar to anything fun or good. Suffice to say just know your limits and we don't have to have thousands of dollars wasted on these pointless research studies.

First of you "source" has probably never been on heroin before and secondly i bet he has never played WoW. I play WoW and i used to be a junkie for like a week. but than i had the heart to have my friend tie me to a chair so that the addiction would ware off. it took like 48 fucking hours but i did it. and trust me WOW IS NOT AS ADDICTIVE AS HEROIN.

Whichever source this comes from has obviously never been addicted to heroin.
This.

But also: OMG sC13nC3!!! Lazergunzpewpew!!!

Seriously, a study that demonstrated that any videogame can be addictive, I could maybe accept. Only one game? Fail. Addictive as heroin? Fail.

People get obsessed and addicted to things. Anyone can really can do it to anything. If someone were so inclined they could get addicted to knitting and have (most) of the same problems.

Connections with the chair he plays WoW in, while there's some psychologist who's trying to cure him of his disease?
Sure.
God is way too busy playing The Sims 8 to deal with petty human affairs (this is why, in case you religious folk have wondered where he's been for the past few thousand years.)
Will Wright doesn't care that Spore was the most pirated game of 2008 and Sims 3 is probably going to beat it. God gave him enough money to make The Sims' 8th installment 2009 years before we only get the 3rd.

Actually, that's quite old news.

And I highly doubt that World of Warcraft is more addicting than freaking HEROIN.

These sources are laughable to be frank.

Besides people who become "addicted" to WoW are the sort who will become addicted to most things.

People who are addicted of WoW are brainless mutants. It is a good game, It's true, and I played it for a long time but I didn't see anything addictive about it.

Really? Are we getting this worked up over WoW? It's a dammed game, the fact of the matter is that all the little WoW nerds need to get off the computer, go outside, and dig up that life of theirs that they buried in the backyard. If they get addicted to WoW, then it's their fault. Society needs to slap these ppl in the face and tell them to grow up. When the latest expansion came out, I had to work a double shift at my job cause all the little WoW nerds called off to go to the midnight release, but I wanted to call off so I could go to the Twilight midnight premier and I couldn't. WoW has screwed up a generation and if they want to call it an addiction let them.

I've never played WoW and I don't understand the attraction it holds for ppl, I play MMORPG's don't get me wrong, but WoW just needs to get over itself. The economy sucks as it is and over 11 million ppl pay to play a game. This world is in need of some mental help.

Now, I'm not easily bored. I used to play Runescape for two years. But addicted to WoW? World of Warcraft is easily the biggest MMORPG out there, however: it sucks! I've played it, it's not fun in the slightest. If something isn't fun, in some sense, it can't be addictive. The people who are "addicted" are deluding themselves.

I'll believe it when clinics for World of Warcraft rehabilitation start to pop up everywhere. I understand that video games can be "addictive" -hell Tales of Symphonia has an addiction warning on it right next to the seizure warning on it- but I've always been under the impression that they're only addictive to those of weak will and excessive sloth. Look, I'm not saying that there aren't intelligent and active people who play WoW but to get up and do something else involves a lot less willpower than quitting heroin. A lot fewer physical effects too... unless you count the positive ones from not sitting in front of your goddamn computer all the damn time.
I'm generalizing here. But I've been addicted to video games and I was able to "quit" very easily.
I agree. My only "withdrawl" from WoW was that I couldn't talk to my WoW-friends and RP with them. That's it. If the RP finally dies there, I'd really have no withdrawl. I might get angry if I get another game card and find I was kicked from my guilds, but that's not withdrawl. Hell, that's almost inspiriation to not play again.

Also, heroin doesn't give a trippy experience, so there isn't as much temptation to try it. I have a friend who got addicted to heroin, and I'll get him to play WoW and see what he thinks.

Heroin can give you a physical addiction. So can cocaine. And definitely crack, what are you talking about.

Pay attention in health class. :/

EDIT: Sorry for the double post, it's hard to judge if a topic is getting fast replies, since I get that a lot when I edit a post.

If it's as addictive as heroin, maybe I should start doing drugs to show people that they aren't addictive.

New Studies have shown that World of Warcraft, the highly popoular online game has the addictive traits of heroin. With some playing 24 hours non-stop before dropping on there floors. It has been called "the drug of the 21st century" with many centres popping up around the world that are designed purely to treat people with WoW addicition. Others believe that addiction habits of World of Warcraft are the same as heroinS Some reports have found that some are so addicted that some have hung themselves rather than give up the game. The properties of addiction in some patients includes taking craps in corners of the room so they dont have to leave the screen, prolonged concentration time which can cause heart failure, malnutrition and dehydration. As many as a few dozen due each year across the globe due to heart failure from playing WoW to long.

Do you agree with these reports, or is it just dribble.

This isnt saying that EVERYONE who plays it will get addicted but it is a problem faced by many people out there.
Not to give you the grouch about it, but I've seen the effects and behaviors of heroin addicts and I've seen the same of WoW addicts.
There is a world difference between the two and comparing a video game which can be, theoretically, walked away from versus a drug that can almost not be quit without another drug to wean off on to, seems crazy.
From someone who has played WoW casually for a few years, AND who has in several instances been in enough pain to be perscribed opiates for short periods of time, there is a world of difference.
When WoW was the be all end all for me,(and it was near the beginning) I'd skip work, social events etc, but I noticed what was happening and immediately remedied the situation. Opiates on the other hand, even having them in your system for a period of 5-7 days can cause effects that last longer. Codeine, once weaned off can cause insomnia and incontinency. Morphine, severe shaking, vomiting, etc etc. And that is off of short term exposure.

Now granted, someone did make the point that you can get bored of WoW and can therefore walk away. Very true, you can. And there's very little side effect to it, aside from an excess of free time ... maybe weight loss. With Opiates, it is much much MUCH worse. People have died going through withdrawls, not just killed themselves, but suffered a full body shutdown.

WoW addiction is troubling, but its not heroin. It can at best be compared to a long drinking night, or a few days with weed. Its fun, you lose track of time, and you forgot to put on pants before you went to work, but thats really about it.

So are cigarettes. Hm?
And I have to hope this was a joke. Living in a big city you'll read in the news that X heroin dealer was found with his throat slashed and all of his drugs taken. Nowhere near likely with Tobacco users. Sure, we get a bit pissy without a butt, I can't say I've heard of murder.
