Why do you think there are no WWI games. I think its because WWI was mostly trench warfare, it'd get kinda boring shooting back and forth at enemy trenches. But it would be fun to charge across no-mans land and fight hand-to-hand in the trenches.

Pretty much, sitting 10 hours in a trench while artillery on both sides pound the living shit out of everything, then charging across a no-man's land while being cut to pieces by heavy machine gun isn't very fun.

It wasn't much fun irl neither :\

This kind of belongs in the gaming section.

But it's the same reason why the Civil War game failed. Because it really sucked, and warfare wasn't like how they depicted it in the game.

Oh yes sitting in hole shooting enemies with one shot rifle while... nothing really happens. It would maybe sucess if Infinity Ward developed it.

It could work, and it could be fun, but only if done right, its not gonna be a fast paced game like COD, more like red orchestra, but smaller goddamn maps so you can find the enemy within half an hour.

people complain about the weapons, but hell bolt action gun nuts like myself will love the game, granted it will be agonising fight, i see and enemy everyone hits the deck, i shoot a guy then another shoots me, then my ally shoots him then he is shot by- you know how it is with weapons like that.

The tanks would be awesome though

There's a segment of the upcoming game Darkest of Days set in WW1 I believe, but other than that it's similar reasons that other people have said, being machinegunned down 10 seconds into the game is not fun.

It's been done many times. Sort of.

Anyone remember this?

It'd be pretty much that, with occasional moments of running across a muddy field and getting mown down by lookouts with machine guns. The advancement-to-death ratio would be low enough to make it a complete waste of a disc.

All these arguments against a WW1 game saying "you'd just sit around for hours and then get killed straight away etc." are a little moot, because that is what war is pretty much like anyway. Games like Call Of Duty and Medal Of Honour show a stylised, quicker version of warfare; very different to reality.

I think a WW1 game would be wonderful if done correctly. The one-shot-lengthy-reload rifles would be counterracted with revolvers and melée combat, and picking your way across cover in no-man's land would be pretty cool.

I've only ever played one WW1 game (I'm guessing Iron Storm doesn't count), and it was literally shit, but the potential is there for someone to bring their Call Of Duty to WW1.

Well it doesn't just have to be Trench Warfare, I mean WWI Did have some epic Air Combat..also There were machine guns but the jammed like no other, but as I recall no guns in any WWII Game jammed so that wouldn't be a problem.

I can see a WW1 game being done, but it would not be fun. It would be massive amounts of sitting in a trench with a rifle. (Extreme Trench Warfare!)

When people think of WW games they automatically think of the FPS genre. Why cant it be a real time strategy game for example?

I think it could work. If I remember correctly, didn't the Eastern Front have less trench warfare?

Things that do work: WWI Combat Flight Sims (though we haven't had a good one in years)
Things that don't work: WWI FPS games (press X to not get dysentery!)

What about an RTS? (As said by someone else in a different thread) You could design the layout of your trenches, choose your Front, and give your orders (make it so they get followed >.>)! Also you could be the Kaiser, English, Yanks, French, Italians, Russians, Austria or Hungary...you can follow all of the great events like when the Aussies shot down the Red Baron :D

I think that this has been done in mods, but not too much in games. Trench warfare done right would probably be cool, just needs a good enough developer. On the other hand, how many truly realistic wargames do you know? I honestly can hardy name 10.

I think it could work ,the adrenaline rush of running between craters as machine gun and artillery tear apart those around you picking off troops wherever possible ,however i reckon it`d sell as well as sniper elite (which was awesome) ,actually that`s an idea a WW1 game where you play as a sniper
