Hey! I've noticed that people use this a lot to ask random things, so I figured I'd join in. If this is against the rules, a quick warning and I'll never do it again.

Anyhow, I have a school project about WWII in which I'm supposed to interview a person who survived the second world war. I wasn't able to, so I interviewed my grandmother, who's father was in it and she gave me a story that's vivid enough to keep in my mind.

The problem is that I'm turning what she told me into a short story, and while it worked incredibly well in a verbal format, a written format demands more detail. Well, if I'm to get a good grade it does.

Anyways, it's a story of the Normandy landings. If anyone's got any details, like a story from their parents/grandparents, some small thing that stuck with them, anything, it'd be much appreciated. I'm doing research and everything, but I'd like to add that extra bit of realism, and it'd be a learning experience, which school is all about.

Thank you, Escapees.

I helped collect memories from WW2 around the town where I live for a book, I'll try and find a link to it as it might contain information you can use (as they were, essentially a bunch of interviews).

If your finding it hard to find someone, you might want to have quite a part of your project about how very little people are around now who fought and experienced World War Two.

here's the link : http://www.beverleycivic.co.uk/VEdayIntro.html

Be nice, some of these people are my relatives :) I hope this helps you.

EDIT: I thought it would be good to point out that quite a few of these people have died since then, again that might be worth mentioning.

Yeah, this was an alternative option for a project I thought would be easier, and I'm able to use it for four other classes, so I chose the interview thing.

My grandfather was a medic in the 4th Infantry Division during the invasion of Normandy, he got a purple heart from a MG 42 bullet grazing his head. He said that even though the front lines had moved past the beaches there was still heavy fighting on them. So in order for him to get the wounded from the front to the landing craft to be taken back to the ships, he had to cross MG nests over and over again.... He made a "book" of sorts of his time in WWII, its pretty cool....

PS - the only reason the Army made him a medic when he was drafted was that he could drive a truck...

Read the book "The Good War".
And not just one part.
The whole damn thing.
Why?
Because it's just fucking awesome.
