A WWI shooter would be shitty because the WWI weapons were shitty. You didn't have automatic and usually even semi-automatic rifles back then so shooting 20 insurgents COD-style would be: pop, clunk-clunk-clunk-clunk, pop, clunk-clunk-clunk-clunk, pop... Well it would take half an hour.
It wouldn't necessarily be shitty, it just wouldn't fit the modern AAA FPS mould terribly well. It would have to do something different to be interesting, and I fail to see what's wrong with that.

From what i read he wasn't involved in the genocide of 1904-07 even though he fought. Thanks for the book though I'll check it out when I have the time
I was just using the example of the genocide of 1904-1907 to point out that you can have loyal black troops and still starve 100000s of black africans to death. As in Europe, having the same skin colour does not mean you won't kill someone else.

Ubisoft's WWI-set Valiant Hearts is supposed to be coming out later this year - a puzzle/adventure game, I gather.

I wish more companies would mine that period of history - I actually think WWI could be a great setting for action games (Uncharted 3 had constant references to Lawrence of Arabia, so why not go full-out in that direction?) or for "walking simulator"-type adventure games (I really think that's where the lice/mud/no-man's-land stuff could be worked for emotion).
