I often see people complaining about the captcha for posting justifiable or not there are a lot worse systems for checking for bots. i for one have seen one that asks you a question that is something like what do Italians eat, then it gives you a list and you pick all that apply. so what bad captcha replacements have you seen.

I've encountered one that gives you a number of circles and you have to click in the one open circle. But the circles are very light colors on a white backround so it can be kind of hard to tell which one is the open circle.

OT: Hmmm...what could be worse than captchas? Well, to be honest, I can't actually think of any. The point of people against captchas is that they do not believe a system such as this should be on a forum at all. Or, in fact, there are those that believe that after enough posts and tests that we're not robots...the entire system should leave us alone, because it's far too late for us to be spambots. Ya dig? It's that you want to test for bots when we are mostly all humans is the problem.

OT: I do remember some really awful ones from the past, they kinda work like captcha does where you have to see the messed up text and write the word. Some were just one set of unreadable text to the next unreadable set of text. The worst ones are where the throw upper and lower case letters in but do not mention if what you have to type needs to just as case sensitive, or to take into account spaces or anything else.

The captchas I see are still in messed up text: either oddly italicized or, as you said, completely unreadable. I recently saw one that had a Delta symbol in it. How in the hell am I supposed to get a Delta symbol there? And some of the aspects you pointed out also get on my nerves (upper/lower case, etc). I understand why the captchas have to have some challenge to them to distinguish the humans from the robots, but come on now .... don't be utterly ridiculous with them.

Captchas that use Wingdings or whatever symbols you can't get with basic keyboards (unless they're keyboards from other countries) or so covered with lines that you can't see the lettering. Or colored to match the background. Some days I swear I'm colorblind to have trouble seeing what's there.

There are two words to a captcha. One is always a jumble of only letters, usually lowercase. You have to get that one right. The other is a word that came from a book that was scanned, you do not have to get it right, or put anything at all. You can put in fagballz or wingaling or just a . and it will accept it for the other word. They're not always in the same order though.

Jesus... Now it makes sense. We never had any goddamn spammers. Ever. I've been here for almost three years now and I've not seen a single goddamn one. I was miffed at CAPTCHA's introduction, but now it all makes sense.

OT: The CAPTCHA is the most irritating system I've seen, but the one on The Escapist is one of the better ones. Some of them use capitals, full alphanumerics and bizarre colours.

Saw a totally hilarious one posted by someone today which was just a skyline. The famous 'New York' key was apparently used to print it, I guess?

the escapist had one where they ask about the opinion about a product shortly after they implemented the captcha system.
Also there is one where you have to solve a math problem...randomly generated resulting in some of them being pretty much impossible to solve.
