WHY HAS NO BODY SAID NARUTO! (for me it counts) BECAUSE EVERYONE KNOWS NINJAS WHERE BRIGHT ORANGE!
Because Naruto, in spite of its flaws, still manages or has managed (depending on individual viewer) to be entertaining. Whenever I hear about the show having too much filler, I go back and watch some of the earlier episodes, usually parts of the Chuunin exams (especially the fight between Rock Lee and Gaara).
Shit, you have me there. That fight was awesome.

Most of the shows now days are pretty terrible, most kids don't even watch cartoons they idolize those tweenage drama-shits. The only thing that gives me hope is Phineas and Ferb, don't judge me till you've seen a few episodes.

I thought it was entertaining the first time they aired the show.

Course back then they called it Dragon Ball.

Codename:Kids Next Door was awful. I hope to god it isn't on anymore. I hated Ed, Edd, and Eddy too.
When I was younger Ed, Ed, and Eddie was about the time I changed the channel. Since that show had maybe one funny episode and even it was sub par.

I love cartoons. I guess I'm a giant man-child in that respect, but animation has always been a huge interest to me. So, the other day I was watching Cartoon Network with my Nephew who is a hugh fan of the show Johnny Test, which is one of the worst cartoons I've ever seen. It's unoriginal, the humor is dismal, the theme song is annoying and best of all, it comes on 4 or 5 times a day, so we get to watch it over and over. It makes me wish my nephew could watch Adult Swim with me, alas that must wait awhile. Now, I know the difference between what a 7 year old and a 25 year old finds funny, but come on!!! It's just one of those shows I could do a better job of with Flash.

It got me to thinking, what other shows have been this bad? I can think of a few, but what do you got?
I feel your pain. I love cartoons and still watch them. But I agree, many of Cartoon Network's cartoons are really bad. They only have like seven shows and all but like two are decent. On occasion they will play one of their old shows once a week. Even Adult Swim is starting to fall behind. The shows they have are too random and dumb. The worst part is their starting a new segment called CN Real, which are a bunch of live action shows. These are dark days my friends.

Naruto. It's like somebody tied you to a pole, loaded a potato gun with a dildo, and fired it right at your face.

It's that bad.

Tak and some juju (whatever) and some more that I can't think of at the moment
Spongebob is AMAZING. 6teen makes me cringe though.

I know, right? The only characters I liked from Naruto were Kakashi and Zabuza.

Let he with no sin cast the first stone. :p

Trust me, viewed objectively the crap we watched as kids was just as bad in it's own way. Though you'd need someone from our parents generation to properly articulate why.

He-Man and The Masters Of The Universe, The Thundercats, Silverhawks, Mon Chi Chis, The Mighty Orebots, Jayce And The Wheeled Warriors, My Little Pony, Maxi's World, Beverly Hills Teens, Pandamonium, Laser Tag Academy,Jem, Galaxy High, Big Foot and the Monster Machines, Gobots, M.A.S.K., G.I. Joe, Bionic Six, Cops & Crooks, Transformers, etc... Not to mention stuff on the USA Cartoon Express like Clue Club, Inspector Inch, and others which the names elude me.

I look back on a lot (but not all) of these things favorably, but I'm inherantly biased as I was the target audience. To "our" parents they were probably seen the same way we look at current kiddie toons.

Though I admit part of the problem might be that the whack jobs of "our" era that were blaming kids cartoons for all the ills of the younger generation (since video games weren't as popular then) are now in power, and rather than the requirement that there be so many minutes of educational content per episode (knowing is half the battle!), the amount of violence and "action" especially fairly serious violence (as opposed to purely cartoony stuff) seems to have been reduced dramatically with the current era of cartoons.

I mean you couldn't do Masters Of The Universe without He-Man pwning people, The Thundercats were always fighting, Jayce and The Wheeled Warriors had a vehicle combat sequence pretty much every episode, etc... The style nowadays seems to be very differant, it seems they've moved towards 'toons rather than a comic-book type approach.

Plus honestly, let's not forget that once upon a time someone thought it was a good idea to do a Saturday Morning Cartoon based around the idea of MC Hammer as a superhero with magic shoes. In crticizing some of the things out there now, let us not forget some of the horrors of the early 1990s. :p

Everything on Disney, Cartoon Network (before 10:30pm), and Nickelodeon (except Invader Zim, but that is not on anymore).

I really hated (and still continue to hate) Drawn Together. I know it's not along the lines of cartoon network daytime shows, but still. I instantly deduct 10 points from people who like that show as well.
I always liked Drawn Together - it was just plain funny. Of course it was racist and sexist and ageist and every kind of -ist, but I found it funny, it pretty much makes fun of everything it could. Only lasted three seasons before they axed it anyway. If you don't mind me asking:

How cumz yo duntt lik it, yo?

Plus, why do so many people hate Spongebob? I agree that the new episodes are awful, but the first season was brilliant. Reminded me of Ren and Stimpy. Speaking of which, there are new Ren and Stimpy episodes on SpikeTV - and those are absolutely terrible. I was happier with the slightly subtle hints that the two were gay, now they have sex in front of my eyes. That just destroys my childhood.

some wise words
The 80s were a strange and unpredictable time for cartoons. There was stuff like Ulysses 31, Galaxy Rangers and Mysterious Cities of Gold that are still good by today's standards, and stuff like Masters of the Universe and Transformers that can, despite their flaws, be enjoyed for their ambition and breathtaking homoeroticism that's so overt it can't possibly have been accidental. Then there's Defenders of the Earth.

Has anyone watched Defenders of the Earth recently? To quote the shortest verse in the good book, Jesus wept. Casual racism aside, the scripts were gibberish with the Lesson Of The Week applied with all the subtlety of a sledgehammer to the balls, the voice acting was half-hearted and the animation looked like every fight sequence was started five minutes before the studio knocked off for the weekend. Apart from the animation the character artwork looked like it was drawn on the back of fag packets by someone who was blind drunk. What a horrible thing to do to Flash Gordon, the Phantom, and whoever the hell the other guys were supposed to be.
