While raiding Illidan I lagged out during the final phase of the fight. I was the tank healer. There was much angry swearing in vent that night.

Back when I played WoW I'd suffer some really terrible lag-spikes whenever the server was about to go down... I think my record was 16k ms or something like that.

More recently TF2 whenever the server I'm playing on is crashing or being overworked... got less of it after i left 32 player servers but it still happens.

Hey guys, lag is crappy latency, not your shoddy framerates.
Unless the definition has changed.
I'm quite certain that lag specifically refers unresponsiveness. To call latency lag is actually incorrect, that is why it has its own name. (I'll go check though and edit this if I'm wrong.)
Latency can cause lag, but so can low frame rate or anything else that reduces the responsiveness of a program.
(To clarify, latency is not lag, it is a cause of lag. Just like viruses wasting CPU aren't lag, they are causers of lag.)

Okay, I'm frustrated. I was playing an MMO called Mabinogi, and there was an event on it. This event had two "Channels" (of five, only two were full) last time I checked. I don't quite know how to explain channels, but I'll try. They're alternate versions of the game world on a server, and usually only one or two are laggy.

This event, the Masquerade, in honor of a new Shakespeare-inspired quest line, is on right now. And the lag made my game crash. Or rather, the influx of players caused the game to lag and crash me out. I've tried logging back in and it's showing my friends list empty and my guild non-existent because of the overload of players and the lag.

So, after this short rant, I want to ask you guys and gals on the Escapist: What's the worst lag you've ever suffered from? How'd you deal with it? Do you know the cause? If so, what was it?
Ha, Dunbarton makes me lag more.

OT: Back in the day when my computer reached the point of "obsolete".
You should add me on Mabi: Endon40

The lag should be down today, since the Masq has ended.

There is no 'worse'. Either my game becomes a slideshow or I get disconnected entirely. There's no "This one time, lag's hand reached from the screen and scratched my face".

I am sorry, but I quit Mabi some time ago.
Ah. No worries. Just glad someone knows about Mabi XD

As someone who plays a lot of fighting games, I think the worse lag you can have is input lag. You know, where you press a button but it takes up to a full 2 seconds before the character on screen does the corresponding action.

That combined with the occasional fact the your opponent doesn't seem to miss a beat with his/her combos and you've got yourself one unhappy Sage. Like I said, it doesn't happen often, but when it does...

Every gears of war game. It's that type of lag that makes you think it's working fine only to make you teleport half a mile from where you were and sometimes explode from an invisible shotgun shell.

Always Call of Duty, whenever someone quits the game. 'Tis annoying.
How did I deal with it? I just turned my XBox off.
You don't see the irony in doing that? Wouldn't that just do the same thing to everybody else who is playing the game with you at the time? I just fail to see a true solution to the problem if you're only course of action is to commit the same act that brought you chagrin in the first place.

Huh.
I wouldn't worry about it. I work in mysterious ways.

The worst lag was when I was having something like 6-12ms pings.

However for some reason, every 30-45 seconds, my connection would just freeze up in the game, and I couldn't do anything. This was in an FPS so being unable to do anything for 2-5 seconds meant I was essentially dead the second it happened.

I still have NO clue how that happened...

Hami Raid in City of Heroes. The lag during those was so bad that the organisers would ask everyone to switch to the most basic looking costume possible to reduce lag.

The new mortal kombat can be very laggy. Any fighting game with bad lag becomes an exorcize in frustration. The ability to pull off combos is impossible, so fights usually just turn into who can jump kick uppercut the fastest because you sure as hell aren't hitting anything else.

I once Played Halo 3 on a dongle, it was laggy as all hell, but that was to be expected.

Aliens vs Predator is all round laggy game though, which is a shame, because the online can be brilliant.

In terms of worst ever, WoW. My net would drop every 10 minutes on the dot during certain time periods. It would drop completely and reconnect in the space of about 5 seconds, just enough for my connection to the WoW server to cut so I'd have to spend about 5 minutes waiting for it to drop me to the character screen and then trying to sign back in. It made anything worthwhile in that game - PvP, dungeons, raiding - completely impossible for me for a while.

Recently, it's been with League of Legends. I'm now at Uni in shitty university housing, with shitty university housing internet. In peak times my MS goes from 350 (which is as good as it gets) to 4000.

I once pinged around 3280 in a League of Legends game because my college caps your bandwidth if you use too much. I quit because it was unplayable.

In Call of Duty 2, I got lagged all the way back to the other side of the map (time rewind lag).
This usually happened when my friend who was hosting the game on his pc alt-tabbed to view his MSN...
