Ive played many games over the years, but sometimes the main character has such a bad name or proffesion, That I just cant stand to play it. Take Mario for example, HELLO!!! he's a PLUMBER not a kickass hero like I'm used to like a jedi or an assasin or an american soldier. these are a few examples of a GOOD main character. so, youve heard my opionion of the worst main character ever(Mario) but who is yours

I come from the older school where our main characters were chefs and frogs and circles with mouths and sometimes things that could only be described as "dots", so that kind of stuff doesn't really bother me all that much.

Recently I'll say that I found it actively annoying having to play as second player in Army of Two (Hey Bro! How you doing bro? Don't taze me bro!), and if I played more JRPGs, their protagonists would annoy me a fair bit too, but since I've learned that JRPG characters annoy me, I've all but stopped playing them, which does help with the problem.

- J

EDIT: Just realized I have exactly one post until I finally hit Gonzo. Better make it a good one... (goes off to scour the forums for something fun)

Let's take bets.

20:1 odds that it takes two pages before Master Chief is said!

On topic now, I think Gordon Freeman is a bad protagonist. He doesn't say anything, it's not even implied that he says things.

Ugh, Kratos from God of War. My friend and I came up with a summary of his character based on how he seemed to us: "I'm tired of doing work for you just because you made me a very generous offer that I probably don't deserve, but I'm going to keep doing the work anyway, but I'll keep whining! Now I'm going to go off and be needlessly violent and scream a lot!".

Edit: Oh, and I don't consider mutes that may or may not lack names and/or faces as characters.

On that note, you might as well take 'the guy' from GTA 3 too. He doesn't even have a name for as far as I know.

anyone who you have to 'take their word for it'. I should be able to know how you act and who you are, don't just say 'i'm the nicest person ever' with nothing to back it up, we should be able to know your nice because you are nice along with 'I'm the bad guy bwuh bwuh bwuh' he should be a dick not say he's one.

Well... I think the guy from serious sam really rubbed me the wrong way, but considering it's a FPS and not something in which you really develop the main character i think it is rather excusable. The characters with a Plot... i think the guy from Alone in the dark

His name was Claude, and i dont think you can call but a non-character a bad one, everyone on this list must truely suck above and beyond the call of duty.

Knowing that I have made someone "lol" would put a smile on my face if I expressed hapiness through smiling, but I don't, so it doesn't, but it still made me feel happy inside.

Off the top of my head, I can't necessarily think of one absolutely bad character in a game. I will have to say, though, the developers will ruin characters with good conceptions with bad dialogue and voice acting.

I'm looking at you Dante......

Mario is classic though, he's more of an icon than a hero, because of his game, the videogame industry flourished in the 80's

Worst video game characters

E.T., James Pond, Gex, Barbie, My little pony, so many to name

By the end of Final Fantasy 8 I found myself wishing Squall was a silent protagonist. The constant introverted sulkiness lost its shine midway through the second disc.

Any Patriotic heroes

eg. I would rather save the alien council in Mass Effect, than actually giving the key to controlling the galaxy to my own kind, for the sake of balance and real peace.

My worst has to be a tie between Gordan Freeman and Dante.

Gordan is a mute (which raises the question as to why they bothered giving him a face and identity if his only interacion with others is going to be staring blankly at everyone else) and despite being an MIT trained physicist...he does little, if any science. That and his goatee sucks.

Dante is an arrogant arse with some of the worst one-liners I've ever heard (at least Duke Nukem's stuff was funny) and for some reason, found himself getting on my nerves quicker than the endless 1 hit kills in Halo 3 on legendary (not even dual pistols and a broadsword will save you from that).

I'd LOVE to try and put that theory to the test.
