I don't really think any present is bad, but my mom buys me a pair of slippers EVERY year. I bet if I went through and counted I would have about 13 pairs of slippers in my closet, almost all of them still in the box. I always tell her each Christmas that I don't need any, but then come Christmas... I open a box and BAM.... slippers. I've grown used to it though now.
For me, I find that it's the presents that come boxed up already as christmas presents, so people can just pick it up and give it to them, with as little thought as possible without not giving anything. It just doesn't feel right.
I usually spend far too much on people I barely know, by actually putting a reasonable amount of thought into what they like or might like and then getting it for them, and sometimes, even making stuff, though that usually happens to people I do like, and a cake, their name put in different colours of sand in a bottle (It sounds really boring, but looks really cool) or something else that actually takes time and effortand occasionaly a blood offering to the dark lords.

But I put thought into it which most people don't, which makes all the difference for me, even if they don't like it.
