So then, it's been a longtime goal of mine to try my hand at 3D modeling, models for TF2 especially. However, I've found Blender to be a total mess, and I can't really drop a few hundred dollars on top-of-the-line software. So would Google SketchUp work for my purposes of making models for the Source engine, or are there issues with file format and whatnot?

I have not used Scetch Up, nor made models for TF2, but what I have done is worked on a lot of CAD programs (Computer Assisted Design), and from that I know that file formats are a huge issue when moving from one program to the next.

So I htink that might be your biggest hurdle in this, and I would suggest checking what files you need for TF2 and what files GSU uses.

Try googling "sketchup blender file conversion". [http://www.google.com/search?sourceid=chrome&ie=UTF-8&q=sketchup+blender+file+conversion]
