Would GRAND THEFT AUTO - ONLINE work?

I have long wondered whether an action-mmorpg version of Grand Theft Auto could possibly work? So here are some ideas that I have been thinking of, but they are obviously un-polished and not completely thought through. I'm just wondering whether anyone else is interested in this kind of game?

There could be the equivalent of Realms (in mmorpgs) where you are given a city (of large proportions) wherein x-thousand players can all play.

The main focus of the game could be faction/gang based warfare where you work your way up through the ranks of the Mafia, for example, to out-govern the ... triads, or any other gangs. By out-govern I mean how well the whole faction is represented and manifests itself within the city - slowly forcing the other gangs out of town by violence or by clever use of the economy.

I suppose this could be achieved in numerous ways, allowing for many types of gameplay that GTA has already used:
- straight out killings/assassinations
- destruction of money making businesses owned by gangs
- theft
- corruption
- making money for the gang as a whole

The gangs would revolve around using money to buy better weapons to equip their men, or buying better businesses with which to make more money, and so on.

Each player could start their own gang, much like a clan, and be the boss. Each boss/gang leader could delegate positions to others to get them established in the city (Some sort of system by which you can influence the city as a whole would be needed to represent this) - giving the game some longevity - and people could to be promoted to better ranks within each gang. (Aside note; one could also infiltrate another gang and destroy it from the inside by being deceptive).

Every player should ultimately aspire to making lots of money for themselves, or helping their gang take over the city. On that note much customisation could be available if you bought a house in-game, vehicles, weapons, clothes, haircut, get-out-of-jail-free cards, etcetera...

The main problem I could foresee with this idea is the whole city descending into chaotic violence. Perhaps it could be solved by implementing a vigilant AI police force and deterrents such as real-time jail sentences or fines.

Also once one gang has ultimately won I can't really think of a great way of making that Realm fun any more... A Realm reset seems like the easy way out.

So yea, any ideas guys?

*EDIT* I am aware there is GTA online but it is very small-scale and bad...

Not if its based on number IV. Everyone would just be driving around sucking at life, grinding on their bowling skills with Roman, and not being able to get weapons.

i think the game would and should drop extreme-realism... it would cripple the game. And also the graphics on the same sort of scale as WoW... Not jaw-dropping but still OK, and accessible with lower end PC's.

It would work but Rockstar would have to do a crapload of editing and fine tuning to get it right.
Yea, i think perhaps Rockstar don't have the background or aspirations to move in that direction... They would probably release a bug-ridden monster and never update it.

Probably not, BUT Saints Row 2 online now thats something to think about.
And yea, I don't know much about Saints Row but perhaps this could be an option... Just a "action-crime-mmorpg" sandbox game sounds fun to me.

Wow, I love this idea.

Just the idea of having gang wars in a huge online world...it would be incredible.

Great idea.

Hmmm...my interest is piqued, do go on!

I'd be quite interested in playing this game.

Yea, imagine cruising down the freeway heading towards a rival gang's turf with the boys... The target is a biker bar, earning the Domino gang $1000's a month, but things go t*ts up. Someone leaked the information of the attack for a fee*. They ambush the road and lots of gunfire, etc. Police turn up and both sides cut their losses and scram... Won't be touching the domino gang again!

Sorry got carried away ;)

*perhaps there would be some use for people who were freelance, working outside of the gangs for the highest bidder... The better they are the more money they can rinse from troubled gang leaders needing an anonymous helping hand.

It could be interesting, and improved with differet cities for different regions perhaps? (think Zoidberg and read that again)

We just need a violent present-day MMO where you can steal cars, the combat is enjoyable, and the driving is solid with an expansive and fun-to-explore (though not necessarily pretty) environment. That's really it. Screw what franchise it's associated with (though I do favor Saint's Row), those are the qualifiers.

You know Second Life is quite popular.

The issue is what happens when lots of people play it? You'd need designated violence areas otherwise it would just be a massive on-line shooter. bystanders would be a rarity since they would be quickly shot, as would cars, simply due to having many people on at once. If you could find a way to encourage people to don't just rampage everywhere and kill everything then it would work.

It would probably work for a little bit. Trouble is eventually it would end up like when you play the game - eventually just rampaging and killing for the hell of it. You'd have to make sure there were clear missions and rules, and that would take away from the sandbox element a little.

ehh maybe, depends on how hard rockstar is willing to work on the online part and all of the managing and plus you know there has to be rules and you know they have never done anything like this before. so its bound to be a little buggy.
but hey it chould work.
