If it's the Samurai aesthetic that's attracting you, then you're spoilt for choice at the moment and there are safer bets for you. Play Nioh or Ghost of Tsushima.

Considering happyninja42 said he(?) didn't like Souls, Nioh probably isn't going to be a viable alternative.
Nioh is different enough that he may enjoy it. The combats pretty unique, and the story is more straight forward. I know lot of people who hate souls, who love nioh.

The general consensus is that Sekiro is too much like Souls for me to likely enjoy it. Which is mostly what I suspected, but I just wanted to hear from some people who actually played them more than I did, and could more accurately compare them.

I'd gotten the impression they were fairly close as far as general gameplay was concerned, with some notable differences in mechanics, so I assumed the overlap between "Likes Souls" and "Like Nioh" would be fairly large. I wasn't aware there was a lot of people who liked one and not the other because of said differences in mechanics.

You're right Nioh does have a more conventional story structure then Souls or even Sekiro, though apparently the story itself isn't anything special beyond a justification for killing the Yokai and getting the Amrita(?).

I really like Souls but never bothered finishing Nioh.

I liked the mechanics well enough but got really annoyed with the inventory management and gave up half-way through the game because of it. I was spending 20 minutes or more cleaning out my inventory after every level and it just felt like such a boring waste of time, but you have to do it to keep your gear properly leveled.

Nioh is very strange. It's clearly influenced by dark souls and ninja gaiden, but its not afraid to carve out its own identity. I would say that its similar to souls, in that it has interconnected level design, shortcuts, souls that you drop upon death, and difficult bosses that recquire you to memorize their move sets. If your main issue is difficulty, then you may not like nioh.

However, I found the actual combat mechanics to be both very different, and much more complex then dark souls. Every weapon is essentially three different, complete weapons in one. If a person had an issue with the more nuanced story of souls, or simply prefer an eastern setting over a western one, they may love nioh.

tldr: nioh builds a unique identity off if dark souls, instead of stealing from it. May be a hit with anime, ninja gaiden, and jrpg fans. The story is far simpler and straightforward then dark souls.

Aaand he also just played through GoT.

To reiterate, it’s mostly the progression design and inventory systems that are most similar to Souls. The core combat and gameplay mechanics themselves are considerably different; might as well be like comparing GoT to Souls itself.
