I am going on a trip and I am bringing my dad's laptop, and so I decided that I would download Fallout 3 on it since I just got it for PC (for the mods) on to the laptop.

Now I already got the mods and already began on my PC.

If I where to download steam, log in, and then copy my Fallout 3 folder and save files to my dad's laptop. Would that work?

If you find the right folders yes.

I had to do something like that recently, and I got it to work.

It might work. You could also just log in and download it through Steam, rather than doing it in an incriminating way. I'm not saying this is morally wrong, just that if you should happen to come across an issue, you don't want to be charge for piracy.

I don't see why not, then again I don't know the inner workings of steam and how it would factor into this. But fundamentally there should be no problems.

I haven't done it with a steam game but the saves are stored locally like any other game so it should work the same.

My understanding is that games purchased on steam, need to be on a steam account to play

Wait. So how do you own Fallout 3? Only through steam? Because if that's the case then why don't you get your PC to make a backup of Fallout 3, use a large usb stick or an external hard drive to copy the backup to and than transfer the backup from the external hard drive to your dads laptop and load up steam and then go restore backup. That would save a hell of a lot of time compared to just downloading it from the net again. Also, if you're like me, it'll save you a lot of your monthly download limit.

As for the saves. I'd just assume that you'd copy and paste those from the save location on your PC to where they should be on your laptop. Of course when steam cloud lost my plants vs zombies save game in which I had spent over 60 hours on, when I tried to copy in my own backup of the save game it didn't work. But, copying save games from one computer to another has always worked on other games for me.
